Notes for J
AMES EDWARD GROUND:
Portrait & Biographical Album, Knox County, Illinois, 1886

James E. Ground owned land in Section 6 of Indian Point Township, and was termed "enterprising and successful."

Born in Knox County 26 Nov 1858, the son of Henry and Eliza (Boydston) Ground, both natives of Kentucky. Henry Ground was born 20 May 1804 and died 30 Mar 1881.

Additional information on the descendents of this family obtained from Donald Thomas (thomashouse@worldnet.att.net) in April 1998. He descends from this couple through Anna Ground and Jacob Hoover.

In June 1998, Donald Thomas reports that he has visited Abingdon and spoken to the caretaker of Abingdon City Cemetery. He learned that James E. and Minnie Ground were buried here, but have no headstones. It was not learned from the records whether stones ever existed, but he "confirmed death dates and fact they are buried there."

Children of J
AMES GROUND and MINNIE COWPER are:
  i.   CLAUDE CHESTER9 GROUND, b. 10 Feb 1885, Knox Co, IL; d. 1917, Knox Co, IL; m. EDITH DUNBAR, Jun 1912; b. 1885; d. 1945, Knox Co, IL.
ii.   ANNA ELIZABETH GROUND, b. 16 Dec 1889, Abingdon, Knox Co, IL; d. 28 Sep 1926, Pattonsburg, Davies Co, MO; m. (1) CHARLES WILLIAM BEVINS, 23 Sep 1909, Litchfield, KS (Anna's 1st mg; divorced); b. Unknown; d. Unknown; m. (2) JACOB AYERS HOOVER, JR., 10 Oct 1914, (Jacob's 5th marriage); md Ellsworth, Ellsworth Co, KS; b. 20 Oct 1873, Pattonsburg, Daviess Co, MO; d. 12 Mar 1957, Denver, Denver Co, CO.
  Notes for ANNA ELIZABETH GROUND:
There is an Anna Eliza Ground 1889-1926 buried at Abingdon City Cemetery in Knox Co, Ill. No particular reason to think it is this Anna Ground, as she was married twice, but the dates fit, and there are no other Anna Grounds to tie the information to at this time (1997).

Information from Don W. Thomas, grandson, tells that Anna died from complications of the birth of her youngest child, Floyd. The child also died within a month of his birth. As she was married in Ellsworth, Kansas, it seems unlikely that her body was removed to Illinois for burial.

Don Thomas later adds (18 Jun3 1998) that he has learned that this is the same Anna:

"Her parents were notified when she took ill and of her passing. I was told as a young boy that the Grounds never liked my Grandfather Jacob and held him responsible for the break up of her marriage to Charles Bevins. They traveled to Western Missouri and insisted she be interred in the Family plot, returning to Abingdon with her remains. At the time of her death she and Jacob Hoover were living in Pattosburg, Davies County, Missouri. Some years later my mother Willis Hoover Thomas and her sister Juanita and half sister Estalle Hoover (Jacob's dau by first wife) visited Abingdon and the Ground Family Plot. I have one picture of this occasion, but unfortunately it is not dated."

Notes for JACOB AYERS HOOVER, JR.:
Notes from Don W. Thomas (thomashouse@worldnet.att.net) on 8 April 1998:

"Children of these Hoovers are my first cousins and siblings. As I write this note everyone in my generation is still alive."

He continues to give details on the family of Anna Elizabeth and her two marriages.

A later message relates: "A distant cousin in California indicated that she thought Kate (the first wife of Jacob) was Anna's (the second wife) aunt, which would make her a Ground or a Cowper or perhaps even a Boydstun."

19 Jun 1998 from Don W. Thomas:

Jacob was actually married at least four times. He married 1) Mattie Wilson and together they had Susie (Dec 1898-Feb 1899), Russell (1900-1967), Ruby (1901-1981), Estelle (1903-1983), twins (Nov 1904-Nov 1904), and Birdy (1906-1909). He then married 2) Kate (no children), 3) Anna Elizabeth Ground, having my mother Willis and her sister and three brothers. It was the birth of the last boy (Floyd Sep 1926-Oct 1926) that Anna took ill with complications and passed in Sep 1926. Jacob married again 4) Carrie Williams in mid or late 1932 as the latest family was getting old enough to care for themselves.

Don Thomas writes again 9 Jan 2000, and sends a complete outline of the descendants of this couple, so details may be attributed to his outline unless otherwise specified.

iii.   JAMES FOREST GROUND, b. Abt. 1893, "Forrest"; d. Aft. 1934, Res Long Beach, CA 1934; m. ELVA CROW, Unknown; b. Unknown; d. Unknown.

He married RACHEL CROW BOYDSTON 08 Mar 1862 in Platte Co, MO, daughter of BENJAMIN BOYDSTON and MARY CUNNINGHAM. She was born 09 Nov 1842 in Buchanan Co, MO, and died 21 Apr 1939 in Platte Co, MO.

OSES BOYDSTON:
Notes from Ruth Walton:

1870 US Census -- Platte Co, MO, Twp 53, R. 35, Fam. #1757
Moses Boydston age 30 b. TN
      Rachel age 26 b. MO
      Mary T. age 6 b. MO
      Henry age 5 b. MO
      John age 3 b. MO

Cemetery Records of Platte County, Missouri, Vol. 2, Platte County Historical Society, 1980, p. 11 (gives birth year as 1831 and says he served in Civil War). (Apparently records of Camden Point Community Cemetery.)

Data from Sylvia Miller includes a copy of Moses' obituary:
"One of Platte County's oldest citizens -- Moses Boydston -- died Wednesday, August 8, 1928, at his home nar Settles Station, at the age of 96 years...He was born in Cox (sic) county, Tennessee, Jul 7, 1829, and came to Missouri with his parents when eight years of age. On March 8, 1863, he was married to Rachel Crow Boydston of Buchanan County. To this union eight children were born. Three have gone on before, namely: Betty, died 1910, Priscilla, died when a small girl, and one in infancy. Five are left with their dear old mother to miss their father: Henry Boydston, Mrs. Mary French of Camden Point, John Boydston of the home, James Boydston of Kerrville, and Mrs. Emma Green of Drexel...Mrs. Boydston, who is also very old, was unable to attend the funeral...Sixty-five years of wedded life, always there with him, caring for him, leading him when his eyesight was gone..."

Another researcher, Gerald L. Stubbs, of Columbia, MO, lists Rachel's death as 11 Apr 1939.

Notes for R
ACHEL CROW BOYDSTON:
Rachel Crow Boydston died at age 96.

Children of M
OSES BOYDSTON and RACHEL BOYDSTON are:
  i.   MARY TOM9 BOYDSTON, b. 02 Apr 1864, prob Platte Co, MO; d. 1960, Platte Co, MO; m. WILLIS A. FRENCH, 25 Apr 1882, Green Twp., Platte Co, MO; b. 30 Oct 1849, Rockcastle Co, KY; d. 1919, Platte Co, MO.
  Notes for WILLIS A. FRENCH:
US Census - Platte County, MO 1870
Township 54, Range 35, Family #1040
Willis French age 23 b. KY
      Elizebeth age 19 b. MO
      Monie age 1 b. MO

This would appear to be a first marriage for Willis French. "Monie" is very close to "Leona/Ona" who is listed as child of marriage to Mary Tom Boydston.

ii.   HENRY BOYDSTON, b. 07 Sep 1865, prob Platte Co, MO; d. 25 Jan 1953, Platte Co, MO; m. JOSEPHINE OLIVER, Unknown; b. 1861, SEE NOTES; d. 26 Aug 1934, Platte Co, MO.
  Notes for HENRY BOYDSTON:
\\\\ Henry lived near Edgerton Junction, Platte County, Missouri.

  Notes for JOSEPHINE OLIVER:
Cemetery records at Camden Point Cemetery show Henry's wife as Josephine Freels, b. 1861 d. 26 Aug 1934, dau of J. & J. Oliver. She may have married a Freels before Henry, or her middle name may be Freels. Ruth Walton also wonders if this is even the same person as "Dickie Frazier" whom earlier records showed as Henry's wife.

Chuck Boydstun submits that Henry Boydstun was married twice:
1) Dickie Frazier
2) Josephine Freels.

iii.   JOHN WILLIAM BOYDSTON, b. 09 Oct 1868, Platte Co, MO; d. 02 Jul 1951, Platte Co, MO; m. ELIZA TOWN, 19 Feb 1890; b. Unknown; d. Unknown, Platte Co, MO.
iv.   NANCY PRISCILLA BOYDSTON, b. 10 Nov 1870, See notes; d. Unknown.
  Notes for NANCY PRISCILLA BOYDSTON:
Ruth Walton's notes:

Paxton says died single; Moses Boydston's obituary says she died when a small girl.

Ruth indicates that Nancy P. Bodyston married Jim Schell.

Ridgely Cemetery records list a Nancy C. Schell (1867-1959) & James H. Schell (1879-1953). Although there is no indication as to the maiden name, this seems more likely to be the Nancy Boydston b. abt 1867, daughter of Steven and Mary Ellen (Fugate) Boydston.

  v.   ELIZABETH BOYDSTON, b. 02 Aug 1872, "Bettie" b. Platte Co, MO; d. 21 Apr 1910, Platte Co, MO.
  vi.   EMMA L. BOYDSTON, b. 12 Nov 1877; d. Aft. Aug 1928; m. .. GREEN, Unknown; b. Unknown.
  vii.   JAMES MOSES BOYDSTON, b. 16 May 1881; d. 28 Apr 1970; m. MATTIE ELIZABETH JAMES, Unknown; b. 26 Sep 1863; d. 17 Aug 1952, Platte Co, MO.
  Notes for JAMES MOSES BOYDSTON:
Ruth Walton says that Wayne Boydston's notes list Audrey Edward as James M. Boydston's wife.
