JEREMIAH WILLISON
Great-Great-Great-Great Grandfather

Jeremiah and his wife, Sarah Death, arrived at Fort Cumberland, Maryland about 1755-56. They came from Virginia, both riding one poor old horse.

In 1755 Fort Cumberland was the temporary home of General Braddock and his troops, and Col. George Washington. This fort had been established by Washington as an outpost on the Western Frontier. Braddock had been sent from England by the King, to rid the Ohio Territory of the French, namely the French at Fort Duquesne (Pittsburgh, Pa. now). The French had recruited most of the Indians to assist them. Braddock's forces were defeated at a tributary of the Monongahela River, near Fort Duquesne. The survivors escaped back to Fort Cumberland. The Indians did not end their war, though. For many years following, Indian raids on western outposts soon cleared the frontiers. These raids occured as far east as Frederick, Md.
It seems a very strange place to take a new bride and to raise children, yet Jeremiah Willison did just that.

Jeremiah Willison was supposedly born in 1731 in Lancaster County, Virginia. Some sources indicate that he was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and there were Willisons in this county in the 1700's. Several theories have been given as to whom his parents were but none has been supported by fact as of yet.

At the time he arrived at Fort Cumberland, ca. 1755-1757, he was married to Sarah Death. The Death family appears to be of French Norman descent and arrived in England in 1066 with William the Conqueror. At this time the Death name was DeAth.

Jeremiah died between December 1811 and February 1812. Sarah died about 1828 or 1829 as their home in Broadhags Addition to Cumberland was sold by the heirs in April of 1829.

Jeremiah and Sarah had the following family:

1. RICHARD WILLISON-born 5 Dec 1757 at Fort Cumberland. He died prior to 1809. Richard married Rachel Hyatt and they had these children: Charles, Amos, Jesse, Elizabeth, Milly, Sally, Anna, Darcus "Darky.

2. WILLIAM WILLISON (G-G G-Grandfather) - b. 24 December 1759 at Fort Cumberland. He died in 1842 near Flintstone, Allegany County Maryland. William married Elizabeth Farmer. Children are:

Elizabeth - 1797, Md-May 1870, Warrior Mountain Farm, Allegany County Maryland. She married ROBERT HAMILTON..
John - Big John - he married Margaret Clough. I have only one child, Harve Willison, who married Stella Sweet. Living in Perry Co. Ohio in 1842/43. *In Hilary Willison's booklet, "Pioneer Settlers of Flintstone, Maryland", he writes: "The Athlete of Maryland was John Willison of W. In a battle with the champion of Bedford County at Bloody Run, John broke the bully's arm with a blow from his fist. John afterwards removed to Ohio, embraced religion, became a class leader and quit fighting. Bureau of Land Management records show John signed for 39.7 acres of land in Belmont County Ohio on 10/7/1834. Patent # OH0040_.085, Document #1579.
William, Jr. - married Esther/Hester Hamilton of Pennsylvania. Esther/Hester is probably the sister of Robert Hamilton who married Elizabeth Willison. Children of William and Esther are Samuel and Orsemus. Probably more. They were living in Perry County Ohio is 1842.
Levi - married a Countz/Coons/Koontz. First lived in the Flintstone area in 1810. In 1814 he sold property in Bedford County, PA. to Charles Willison, his uncle. In 1842, Levi was living in Perry County Ohio. Children were William, Elias, Katy, Elisha, George, Betsy (Elizabeth?) and Levi, Jr.

Rachel - married Thomas Beall, 1815, in Allegany County, MD. She and Thomas were still living in the Flintstone area in 1842.
Tabitha - married Elijah Barker. They were living "out of state" in 1842.
JEREMIAH OF WILLIAM - married Eleanor Casteel. Children were Amos, Dorcas, William, Susan and Rebecca. This family lived in Bedford County PA. See this family highlighted below.****

3.CHARLES WILLISON - b. 21 Aug 1761 at Fort Cumberland. According to Hilleary Willison, Charles had three wives. Either wife #1 or #2 went with him to Redstone Old Fort (now Brownsville, PA.) where his wife and one child died from smallpox. Charles carried the remaining child in front of him on horseback to his father, Jeremiah, in Cumberland. This child, named Mary, was raised by Jeremiah. When grown she married Henry Yantz, a tavern keeper in Cumberland. Charles' last wife was Amelia Farmer of Bedford Co. PA. Their children were: Aaron, Eli, Asa, Annah ( Hilleary Willison's mother), Elisha, Jasper, Charles, George, Nancy, Savilla, Esther.

4.ANN WILLISON - born 3 September 1763 at Fort Cumberland. Ann married Elijah Schofield, a minister with the early Church of the Brethren. The 1810 census shows Elijah and Ann living in the Flintstone, Md. district with 7 children. At some period after this they moved to Licking County, Ohio where Elijah was a leader of the Jonathan Creek Brethren Church. Elijah is buried near this early church but Ann's grave has not been located.

5. RACHEL WILLISON - born 21 Jun 1765 at Fort Cumberland. Married John Span Conaway and moved to Ohio.

6. ELISHA WILLISON - Born 21 May 1767 at Fort Cumberland. Died 1842 in Hartford Twp., Licking County, Ohio. Married first Esther Hyatt and had the following children:

Hyatt - born 1785, Brooks Co. VA, died 1864 in Ohio. He married Susanne Potter
Diadema - born 11 Jan 1787 in Brooks Co. VA, died 23 Aug 1881. On 17 Sept 1805 she married George Green. I have only one child, Mahala, but there were others as listed in "The Green Tree" by Robert M. Green.
Elias - born 29 Dec 1788 in Brooks Co. VA., died 19 Aug 1845 in Clark County, Illinois. He married Phoebe Vail and had the following children: Silas, Sallie, Clarissa, John A., Aaron S., William W., Harvey H. and Leroy.
Sarah - born 12 Mar 1791, died 25 Aug 1870 in Monroe Twp., Licking Co. OH. Buried in Green Hill Cemetery, Licking County. She married Reginald Green. Additional information in "The Green Tree" by Robert M. Green.
Jeremiah - born 31 January 1792 in Brooks Co. VA., died 23 Apr 1872, Monroe Twp., Licking Co. OH. Married 14 Feb 1814 to Sarah Stymets and had the following children: Oliver, Addis, Effie, Esther, Madison, Miles, Louisa, Tarzy, Mary Lovina and Jeremiah.
Elisha- born 14 Sep 1802, Licking Co. OH, died 9 Feb 1888 in Jackson County, Iowa. He married 4 May 1824, Licking Co. OH to Jane Foster and had the following children: Martha, Jasper, Sylvester S., Sylvenus, Hannah, Mary Elizabeth, Elisha and Dema Fidella. Additional information on this family below.*****

Elisha married second Polly Lynn and had the following children:

Esther - born 1796, Monroe Twp., Licking Co. OH, died 8 Nov 1864 in Noble Co. Indiana. Married ca. 1813 to Hezekiah Green.
Mary/Polly - born 1797, Brooke Co. VA, died ca. 1819, Burlington Twp., Licking Co. OH. She married Thomas Green 26 Oct 1820.
John - born 1798, Brooke Co. Va, died 1861. He married Hannah Hullbutt.
Amelia "Milly" - born 1799, Brooke Co. VA. She married 28 May 1821, John High. I have only one child, Philip High who married Nancy Williams.
Nancy Ann - born 1803, Licking Co. OH, died 4 Oct 1877, Cromwell Sparta Twp, Noble Co. IN. She married 28 Oct. 1823, Licking Co. OH, Rolley DeVault.

7. JEREMIAH WILLISON II - Born 17 Oct 1769 at Fort Cumberland. Jeremiah decided to move west also but does not seem to have gone any further than Redstone Old Fort (now Brownsville, PA.). No one ever heard from him again after he reached this point. A few years later one of his brothers was passing through the same place and claimed to have seen Jeremiah's scalp hanging from the belt of an Indian Chief. The brother recognized the hair as Jeremiahs because of it's peculiarities.

8. JOHN WILLISON - born 17 October 1772 at Fort Cumberland. He died in 1849. John married Dorcas Moore. They had the following children:

Elitha "Letty" - born 1796, Allegany Co. MD. She married John Wesley Lakin. I show only one child, John T. Lakin who had two children, Singleton and Henrietta.
Elisha - born 10 Nov 1798, Flintstone, Allegany Co. MD, died 1861 in Allegany Co. MD. He married his cousin, Anah Willison, daughter of Charles, above. Children listed under Anah's name. Parents of HILLEARY FARMER WILLISON.

Abel - born 15 Oct 1802, Flintstone, Allegany Co. MD., died 22 Nov 1867. He married 1833, Melinda Casteel. They had the following children: Carl W., Thomas J., Eliza M., John W., Mary E., David L. and Martha E.
Lena - died prior to 1849. She married a Holtzman.

9. NANCY/MARY WILLISON - born 29 Dec 1774 - married Nathan Robinette. They lived in the Flintstone area where they raised the following children: Elisha R., Jasper, Jeremiah, Upton Ace, Amy, Christina Teney.

AMOS - b. 1805, Allegany Co. MD., d. 1891, same place. He married Susan Anah McELFISH on 1 Jan 1822 in the same county. Children of Amos and Susan were: Elsyann; Elizabeth; Henry; Massi(?); Archibald and Andrew Jackson. Andrew Jackson Willison lived in Frostburg, Md. as an adult. He owned and operated a lumber yard, was mayor at one time, on the board of directors of one of the banks, builder of some of the fine homes of Frostburg and father of 10 children by two wives, Missouri Hartzell and Mary Masters.

DORCAS - b. 8 Mar 1805; d. 2 Feb 1876. Dorcas married Israel Friend and lived in Garrett County, MD. Dorcas kept in touch with her brother, William. Dorcas and Israel Friend had the following children:

            married Margaret Hetrick. They had the following children: Olive

            Willison, Mead Anderson Willison, Fred S. Willison, Bessie Matilda
            Willison Wolfe, Blanche L. Willison Lamberson, Rosa Willison and
            Ernest.

            George W. - b. 17 Aug 1858-d. 1 Oct 1942-George and wife, Mary
            Reedy, had the following children: Warren Raymond Willison, Essie
            Hazel Willison, Randall Willison and Villa Willison.
    Dorcas Jane - b. 13 Jan 1859, Mahoning Twp. Armstrong Co. PA.
            d. 13 Dec 1912; with George William McDonald, she had the following

        Samuel Porter - born 12 Mar 1864, Mahoning Twp. Armstrong Co. PA.
            Died 18 Nov 1928, Chester, VA.
            Samuel married Martha Jane McCain.
