LUCY
EMELINE
1868-1939
While looking through
some old records held by the Methodist Church in Flintstone, I found Lucy
Emmeline who had herself baptised in 1884, at the age of 16. At this
time she names her parents as William A. Hamilton and Rebecca Hamilton.
Lucy never appears on Allegany County census records. Additional
information was found in West Virginia records.
Lucy Emmaline was
born 16 July 1868. She married William Alderton, son of Wesley and
Mary Alderton of Morgan County, WV on 28 February 1884. Lucy Hamilton
died 25 December 1939 and is buried at Camphill Cemetery, Paw Paw, WV.
William is not buried with her.
HORACE
RESLEY HAMILTON
1869-1920
See Picture
HORACE
RESLEY HAMILTON was born 12 July 1869 on Warrior Mountain, Allegany
County Maryland. He was the first child born to William Alexander
Hamilton and third wife, Martha A.Coons. Wes was almost 6 years old
when his father died in 1875. This left Martha Hamilton with at least
five children of her own under the age of six, and several more of William's
children by his second wife. Wes once told his wife he remembered
when they brought his father in from the fields, already dead, and laid
him out on the table. After the burial, William's older children
were
anxious
for Martha to take her children and leave the farm. The first winter
on the farm after William's death, the family nearly starved. Wes
remembered digging beneath the snow to find
hickory
nuts and acorns for the family to eat. Eventually Martha moved her
family to the Graham Farm in Frostburg, Maryland, where she worked as a
cook for the Grahams, Wrights and Laymans, successive owners of the farm.
The children also worked on this farm when they were old enough.
Information
and pictures on the Graham Farm can be found at
http://rootsweb.com/~mdallegh/grahamto.htm
Wes
married a Scottish lass, Annie Gray Clark, and they lived near Martha in
the Grahamtown section of Frostburg, Md. Wes was sheriff of Allegany
County at one time but he died in 1920 from an accident in the Hoffman
Mines. Wes is buried in Frostburg Cemetery. Wes Hamilton and
Annie Clark had these children: Horace Clarke, Laura, Margaret, Betty Claire,
Helen Frances.
Grandmother
Mother's Mother
See Pictures of
Rachel and her Dando family.
Rachel
Hamilton, daughter of William Alexander Hamilton and Martha A. Coons,
was born on Warrior Mountain, Allegany County Maryland, on 2 November 1870.
She was named for her grandmother, Rachel Bucy. Raised on the
Graham/Layman Farm in Frostburg, Rachel married there, at the age of 18,
William DANDO of Frostburg.
After
marriage the Dando family moved to Hill Street in Frostburg where they
lived across the street from William Dando's father and brother.
Rachel sometimes told people that her middle name was Elizabeth, but this
doesn't appear on any official records. Since she was born the same year
her grandmother, Elizabeth Willison Hamilton, died, 1870, it seems likely
that Elizabeth was indeed her middle name. Rachel died of pancreatic cancer
at Miners' Hospital, Frostburg, in 1956. Children of Rachel Hamilton
and William Dando are: James McComas, Eva Letitia, William Hamilton, John
Marshall, Ruth, Rachel Lillian, Mildred.

Dent
and Van both grew up on the Graham/Layman Farm in the Grahamtown area of
Frostburg, Allegany County Maryland. Both were deaf for most
of their lives, supposedly from a childhood illness. Both brothers
attended the Maryland School for the deaf in Frederick, Maryland, and both
were self supporting. They lived together in the Grahamtown area
of Frostburg until Denton died in 1943. At that time, Van moved in
with his niece, Mildred Dando VanHorn. Vanderbilt died of cancer
in 1944.
