WILLIAM ALEXANDER HAMILTON II
1845-1894

Alex was born 1845 in Pennsylvania, according to census records.  After the death of his father, Alex tried to keep the Warrior Mountain Farm.  This involved several law suits with the numerous heirs of this estate.  Alex appears to have been living on the farm throughout the legal battles and raised some of his children there.  Alex married first Elizabeth Flanigan/Eastman and they had six children.  After the death of Elizabeth he married Mary G. Twigg, 7 Dec 1889 in Allegany County Maryland.  Alex and Mary had three children.   While visiting a neighbor in 1894, Alex dropped over dead.  He is buried with his first wife on the Warrior Mountain Farm.  Children of Alex and Elizabeth are: Addie Virginia, Ashford, Emory Alfred, Clara Etta, Craegon/Cragon, Myrtle.  Children of Alex and Mary G. DANIEL SIMPSON HAMILTON

Daniel was born 7 June 1847 and may have been a twin to Matthew Hamilton.  Daniel did not show up on any of the census records as living with his father, but he was listed as a son and heir at the time the estate of William Alexander Hamilton was probated in 1875.
Daniel enlisted in the Union Forces, Potomac Home Brigade on 5 December 1862.  He was mustered out 29 May 1865.  During his last year of service, Daniel spent most of his time in Military Hospitals in Maryland, including the hospital located at Clarysville, MD.

See Family Photo Album for pictures of family

ANDREW JACKSON HAMILTON was born in 1856 in Allegany County Maryland.  He went by his middle name of Jackson or Jack.  On 28 October 1874, he married Susan M. Huff, daughter of Jasper Huff and Mary Jane Crabtree, in Allegany County.  Sometime about 1915 Jackson and Susan moved to Mt. Pleasant, Jefferson County Ohio.  Another researcher who remembers "Uncle Jack and Aunt Sue," says that Jackson dealt in horses while living in Ohio.   Both Jackson and Susan died in Ohio.  Susan died in Belmont County Ohio in 1937.
Children of Andrew Jackson and Susan are:
Marshall Hamilton - born 30 Sep 1876, Oldtown, Allegany Co. Md. - died 29 Aug 1949, Carrolltown, Carroll County Ohio.  Marshall married Agnes SIMPSON and they had the following children: Elizabeth who married Joseph L. Kessler

JAMES HANSON HAMILTON
Born 1857 in Maryland
James Hanson Hamilton was born 1857 in Allegany County Maryland.  In this same county, he married Louisa Twigg, 25 January 1881.  Louisa was the daughter of Samuel Twigg and Mary Polly Twigg.  According to a Hamilton cousin who remembers "Uncle Hance," he went blind during his later years.  He and his wife lived in Cumberland, but at some point Hance moved into a separate house on the same street as his wife.  He devoted his days to making rheumatism medicine, which he patented and sold in quantity.  This is the second Hamilton I've found who did not live with their spouse but in a house of their own near by.  Children of Hance and Louisa are: James Alva, Cora E., Wilbur L., George R., Lavinia, Nelly.

CHARLES SANFORD HAMILTON
1860-1925

Charles was born 14 July 1860 in Allegany County Maryland.  He died 16 May 1925.  In 1880, Charles married Rachel Anna RUBY.
A 1913 land transaction shows a Sarah C. Hamilton releasing her dower rights to property being sold by Charles.  It is unsure at what point Sarah replaced Rachel Anna.  By 1910 Rachel Ruby had divorced Charles and was living with her parents and daughter Roda. Charles made his home in Corriaganville, MD.  Another cousin remembers he was considered handsome and sort of a "ladies' man."  Children of Charles and Rachel are: Roda, William C., James McCullough.

More children of Wm. Alexander Hamilton

LUCY EMELINE
1868-1939
While looking through some old records held by the Methodist Church in Flintstone, I found Lucy Emmeline who had herself baptised in 1884, at the age of 16.  At this time she names her parents as William A. Hamilton and Rebecca Hamilton.  Lucy never appears on Allegany County census records.  Additional information was found in West Virginia records.

Lucy Emmaline was born 16 July 1868.  She married William Alderton, son of Wesley and Mary Alderton of Morgan County, WV on 28 February 1884.  Lucy Hamilton died 25 December 1939 and is buried at Camphill Cemetery, Paw Paw, WV.  William is not buried with her.

ANNA B. HAMILTON
Born ca 1865
Anna appears only on the 1870 census and in the estate documents of her father.

ULYSSES GRANT HAMILTON
Born ca. 1866
Ulysses appears in the 1870 census records, living with William and Martha Hamilton.  Census records indicate Ulysses was born in 1866.  Some Hamilton cousins say they remember Ulysses, that he was a logger in West Virginia, that he was deaf and that he lived to be nearly 100 years old.  He seems to be buried in the Charles TWIGG family cemetery near Oldtown.  Current owner of the Twigg property noted that Ulysses was a "half-brother" to Mac Hamilton.  If this is so, William Alexander may have had a fourth wife.  Another relative indicates that Ulysses died in the 1930's and there was controversy over his death that caused his body to be exhumed and reburied.

ELLEN B., MASON, RUSSELL, EMMA B., BENTON D.
Ellen is listed as an heir in her father's estate and is also listed in several land records as a member of this family.  She was not listed in the 1870 census and William was married to Martha Coons by that time.  Martha became guardian of those children she bore to William plus the younger children from his previous marriage, but Ellen is not listed as being under Martha's protection.
Emma B. is listed as an heir and orphan of William Alexander Hamilton in Equity Case #3219, Allegany County, Md. Court records.
Mason, Russell and Benton are listed as children by another Hamilton researcher.  I have found no other record of them.

Martha A. Coons, daughter of Daniel Coons and Rachel Bucy, was the mother of the rest of the children.

HORACE RESLEY HAMILTON
1869-1920
See Picture

HORACE RESLEY HAMILTON was born 12 July 1869 on Warrior Mountain, Allegany County Maryland.  He was the first child born to William Alexander Hamilton and third wife, Martha A.Coons.  Wes was almost 6 years old when his father died in 1875.  This left Martha Hamilton with at least five children of her own under the age of six, and several more of William's children by his second wife.  Wes once told his wife he remembered when they brought his father in from the fields, already dead, and laid him out on the table.  After the burial, William's older children were
anxious for Martha to take her children and leave the farm.  The first winter on the farm after William's death, the family nearly starved.  Wes remembered digging beneath the snow to find
hickory nuts and acorns for the family to eat.  Eventually Martha moved her family to the Graham Farm in Frostburg, Maryland, where she worked as a cook for the Grahams, Wrights and Laymans, successive owners of the farm.  The children also worked on this farm when they were old enough.
Information and pictures on the Graham Farm can be found at
  http://rootsweb.com/~mdallegh/grahamto.htm
Wes married a Scottish lass, Annie Gray Clark, and they lived near Martha in the Grahamtown section of Frostburg, Md.  Wes was sheriff of Allegany County at one time but he died in 1920 from an accident in the Hoffman Mines.  Wes is buried in Frostburg Cemetery.  Wes Hamilton and Annie Clark had these children: Horace Clarke, Laura, Margaret, Betty Claire, Helen Frances.

RACHEL HAMILTON
1870-1956

Grandmother
Mother's Mother
See Pictures of Rachel and her Dando family.
Rachel Hamilton, daughter of William Alexander Hamilton and Martha A. Coons, was born on Warrior Mountain, Allegany County Maryland, on 2 November 1870. She was named for her grandmother, Rachel Bucy.   Raised on the Graham/Layman Farm in Frostburg, Rachel married there, at the age of 18, William DANDO of Frostburg.
After marriage the Dando family moved to Hill Street in Frostburg where they lived across the street from William Dando's father and brother.   Rachel sometimes told people that her middle name was Elizabeth, but this doesn't appear on any official records. Since she was born the same year her grandmother, Elizabeth Willison Hamilton, died, 1870, it seems likely that Elizabeth was indeed her middle name. Rachel died of pancreatic cancer at Miners' Hospital, Frostburg, in 1956.  Children of Rachel Hamilton and William Dando are: James McComas, Eva Letitia, William Hamilton, John Marshall, Ruth, Rachel Lillian, Mildred.

Denton Hamilton
See Picture
Was born 1872 on Warrior Mountain, Allegany County Maryland.  He died 1943 in Grahamtown, same county.

Vanderbilt Hamilton
See Picture
Was born 1875 on Warrior Mountain, Allegany County Maryland.  He died 1944 in Frostburg, Allegany Co. MD.

Dent and Van both grew up on the Graham/Layman Farm in the Grahamtown area of Frostburg, Allegany County Maryland.   Both were deaf for most of their lives, supposedly from a childhood illness.   Both brothers attended the Maryland School for the deaf in Frederick, Maryland, and both were self supporting.  They lived together in the Grahamtown area of Frostburg until Denton died in 1943.  At that time, Van moved in with his niece, Mildred Dando VanHorn.  Vanderbilt died of cancer in 1944.

JEMIMA HAMILTON
1875-1955
See Picture
Jemima Hamilton was born in 1874 on Warrior Mountain,Allegany County Maryland.  She was named after her great-great grandmother, Jemima Bucy.  Minnie was raised on the Graham/Layman Farm in the Grahamtown section of Frostburg, Allegany County Maryland.  Minnie married Wesley Anderson and lived on Welsh Hill in Frostburg.  In old age, Minnie lived with her daughter, Rachel Anderson Lease, near Naves Crossroads, Cumberland, Maryland.  Minnie died at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, in 1955.  Children of Jemima Hamilton and Wesly Anderson are: John, Leota, Lawrence, Florence, Leticia, Sarah, Alvin, Martha, Rachel Ellen.
