Notes for GARHARTH 'GARRETT' VON SWEARINGEN:
Garharth Von Swearingen was born at Binstel Dam, Holland, a small community on the outskirts of Amsterdam in 1636.
He sailed to america in 1656 with three ships to replenish the colony in northern Maryland. He had completed his duties to the Dutch government by this time and the colony had fallen to England as a result of the Dutch-English War. After being in America for several years, he began spelling his name Garrett Von Swearingen.
Garrett was granted 2,000 acres at St. Marys Maryland as payment for surveying and laying out the city of St. Marys, Maryland. He married a French lady whose name is unknown.
The Swearingen name is recorded back to 1290, and at that time it was spelled 'Swearinham'.
Biblical historians have tried to connect this name with Jacob's son, Zeblum, because of the scripture in Genesis 49:19 which says that Jacob stated that Zeblum's children would be at a place of Heaven of the Seas and Heaven of Ships, which fits the description of Holland.
