Poem written by Lula Palmer:

A Beauty of Spring

The violet has a purple stem
As beautiful as any gem,
And lacy bloom of daisies white,
Adorn the earth to make it bright.
The buds upon the trees are green,
As in every Spring since time began.
The open window curtains sway
To gentle breezes that portray
A song of Spring by birds and bees,
Whom Mother Earth has tried to please-
By featuring her flowers to view;
Each Spring somehow her beauty's new.

by Lula Palmer Martin

NOTE FROM PAULINE MARTIN FULTON (LULA'S DAUGHTER):
"I found on some poems where she (Lula) wrote name (Dee Metrius); she put "pen name". In my recollections of conversations with my mom (Lula), I thought she said that was my Uncle Dee's middle name. I don't really know, but it amused me that she signed some of her material that way"

WRITTEN BY LULA PALMER MARTIN SOMETIME IN THE 1960'S:
Coming from Switzerland by way of Germany, to America, landing in the east and coming to the midwest, they homesteaded land. Uncles, aunts, sisters, brothers, mothers, fathers; the whole community almost, was related. Homes were built, and barns to house their livestock. By the time I was five years old, things were quieted down and there was no more fear of Indians. My father (John E. Palmer) was born in 1860 and his father served in the Civil War under General Sheridan who remained his hero. He called the soldiers bluecoats. One of Grandfather's favorite politicians was Steven A. Douglas. Gramps was named after him and they called gramps "Big Steve".

LULA PALMER MARTIN WRITES:
Cisne, IL: I remember our farm house being built. I was born in the south where Mother and Father had homesteaded 360 acres of land. In home steading there had to be built on the grounds, living quarters and the ground had to be farmed.
This was entitled "the Early Years" (In the ten years after 1900) So I guess they lived in Cisne, IL.
