Ludwig immigrated with his parents, Friedrich and Maria (Stolt) Bode, from Empede, Hannover, Germany. After settling with them in Monee Township, Will County, Illinois (south of Chicago), he followed his brothers to Nicollet County, Minnesota, where he met and married Maria Stolt.
