Notes for J
OHN M. DANIEL, JR.:
John M. Daniel, Jr. was born in Fayette Co., TN. The family moved to Yalobusha Co., MS in 1840/1 and to Upshur Co., TX by 1857. He married Harriett Flanagan in Yalobusha County, about a year before the family moved to Texas. His first two children were born in the village of Calloway in Upshur County, and the third in Wood County. The Flanagan family lived in Yalobusha Co., MS when the Daniels were there.
He was granted 40 acres of land in Upshur Co. by his father on 1 January 1861, 12 miles west of Gilmer on the "waters of Big Sandy bio", adjacent to 40 acres granted to his brother William J. Daniel. These brothers married Flanagan sisters, Mary (to Wm. J.) and Harriett (to J.M.). In the 1880 census son John M. Daniel (III) says father was born in Alabama. This is an error.

From The Handbook of Texas On Line: CALLOWAY, TEXAS. Calloway, one of the earliest settlements in Upshur County, was on Calloway Hill, near Farm Road 49 some ten miles west of Gilmer. The settlement was established around 1853 as a way station on the road from Jefferson. In antebellum Texas, Calloway served as a shipping and trading center for farms and plantations in the western part of the county. A post office opened there in 1855, and by the eve of the Civil War the town had a cotton gin, a blacksmith shop, and several stores and saloons. After the war, Calloway continued to prosper. In 1885 it had an estimated population of 250, three steam gristmill-cotton gins, three churches, two blacksmith shops, a general store, and a district school. Among the town's prominent citizens was James B. Cranfill, an influential Baptist leader. By the mid-1890s the population of Calloway reached 300. After 1900, however, the community began to decline. Its post office was closed, and many residents moved away. By the mid-1930s the town was no longer shown on county highway maps.

He served in the Civil War, enlisted at Tyler as a private on June 16, 1862, and served in Co. E. 22nd Regiment, Capt. Renshaw's Company, Hubbard's Regiment, Texas Infantry. We now know how he died and where he is probably buried. His widow remarried to Isham LaRue in 1864.

New information (2001) from Walter White, who has compiled a history of this regiment:
Company E had only two Company Muster Rolls, those for May-June 1862, and January-February 1864. This was possibly due to a lack of paper. There was an epidemic of "camp fever" or typhoid that swept the regiment at Camp Nelson near Little Rock, Arkansas between October and the end of December 1862. This company had the highest death rate. Many of the men were sent home sick and never returned to duty. Captain Renshaw was one of these. This information strongly indicates that John M. Daniel, Jr. died in late 1862 in Arkansas and was probably buried there. Muster Roll of December 1862 said that his brother M.V. (Martin VanBuren) Daniel, was absent sick.

Notes for H
ARRIETT FLANAGAN:
Harriett Flanagan Daniel blended her family with that of Isham Larue in September of 1864. She and Mr. Larue had four children together. He brought four into the marriage, and she brought her three Daniel children. There were eleven altogether.

Children of J
OHN DANIEL and HARRIETT FLANAGAN are:

55. ii.   JAMES YARBOROUGH DANIEL, b. November 11, 1859, Calloway, Upshur Co., TX; d. July 08, 1910, Wood Co., TX.
iii.   JOHN M. DANIEL III, b. February 13, 1863, Calloway, Upshur Co., TX; m. LIZZIE LACY, September 24, 1884, Smith Co., TX; b. Abt. 1865.
Notes for JOHN M. DANIEL III:
John Daniel, age 17, was living with step-brother Sammie Larue and family in 1880. Born TX, father born AL (sic), mother born MS. Have found no other records of him. He probably thought of Isham LaRue as his father because his own father died just a few months before he was born.

His marriage to Lizzie Lacy has not been verified, but it is quite likely correct.
