History of Butler County includes Plains Presbyterian in Cranberry Township. Robert Boggs was among the earliest elders, from about 1812. The church was re-organized in 1838 and the Robert Boggs family became members of the New Plains Church. Operated a general store in Evans City, PA. In 1850, 1860 Census. Died at the age of 66 years. Received by examination into membership at Plains Presbyterian Ch. June 26, 1846, with his wife Mary Jane. A certificate of death was filed in Butler Co., PA on June 13, 1877 by Joseph W. Boggs stating that his father Robert Boggs Jr. died on May 31, 1877 at about 7:30 PM on said day. Filed in the Register by J.D. Anderson. Both lived in Jackson Twp, Butler Co., PA.

Excerpts from his will: I do appoint my beloved wife Mary Jane Boggs and my son Joseph Walton Boggs executors of this my will and testament and I do further direct that my wife Mary Jane Boggs shall have full power to sell or transfer and estate real or personal and make deeds in fee simple... Andrew L. Boggs...(unmarried daughters)Elmira Bell and Mary Armelda Boggs...daughters Elizabeth and Salinda...James Boggs, Russell H. Boggs, Joseph Walton Boggs, Elmira Bell Boggs, Mary Armelda Boggs and Andrew Leland Boggs. Signed Robt Boggs. Attest A.D. 1877. Witnesses Robert Ash and Nathan M. Slater. Attended the 1900 reunion. Killed in car wreck 1923. Melinda or Salinda, the car she was riding in with William Clayton and Mell was struck by a train in Mars. Only Mel escaped with her life and few injuries. She had no children. R. L. Bair has Sellinda born 1840.

Boggs dies following injuries.An injury received two months ago while in California caused the death of Russell Hurd Boggs yesterday. Age 78 years, head of firm of Boggs & Buhl. Mr. Boggs died at his home, "Hohenberg" at Sewickley. His widow, his brother, one daughter and three sisters were present at his bedside. The funeral service will be held tomorrow at Sewickley at 4:00pm and internment will be in Sewickley Cemetery. Special trains will leave the Pennsylvania Railroad Station at 3:00 and 3;05pm daylight saving time. Mr. Boggs was born in Evans City in 1844, and after finishing school entered the mercantile business conducted by his father, Robert Boggs, Jr. In 1864 Mr. Boggs married Miss Marie C. Buhl, a sister of Henry Buhl, Jr., his lifelong partner. Mrs. Boggs died in May 1919. He recently married Mrs. Mary Walker Nichols of Philadelphia. He moved to old Allegheny in 1869 and formed a parthership with Henry Buhl, Jr. under the name of Boggs & Buhl. The new firm established a small dry goods store in a building which still stands across the street from the site of the present store. Mr. Boggs became head of the Boggs & Buhl Co. with its incorporation severl years ago. He was also president and one of the founders of the Dollar Savings and Trust Co., a director of the Second National Bank of Allegheny, director of the Sewickley Valley Trust O., Philadelphia Co., Duquesne Light Co., Pittsburg Railways Co., the Fort Pitt Spring & Manufacturing Co., and the Pittsburgh, Harmony, Butler and New Castle Railway Co. which he financed and built. Mr. Boggs had always been active in church and charitable work, and for many years was elder in the North Presbyterian Church until he moved to Sewickley, when he became affiliated with the Sewickley Presbyterian Church.He was member of the Union Club of which he was president for several years, the Duquesne Club, the Pittsburgh Athletic Association, and the Pittsburgh matinee Club.Mr. Boggs leaves his widow, Mrs. Mary Walker Boggs, a daughter, Mrs. Emma Marie McBride, a brother, Lawrence E. Boggs of Kalamazoo, Mich., and three sisters, Mrs. William Claton, Mrs. Henry Beam of Evans City, and Mrs. Ella Dart of Valencia.The estate includes large holdings in bonds of the Pittsburgh Mars and Butler Railway Company, The Pittsburgh, Harmony, Butler and New Castle Railway Company, Ellwood Koppel Bridge Company and stocks of railroad, mining and street railway companies. Nine Hospitals, other Institutions receive Bequests. A decree making distribution of personal property in the estate of the late R. H. Boggs, amounting to $1, 713, 306.98 was handed down in Orphan's court yesterday. The fund is $1,538,122.69 principal and $174,184.129 interest. The death of Russell H. Boggs death is July 9, 1932.

Died at the age of 75. Submitted to USGenWeb Archives by Patty Williams. PATTYWms@aol.com. Her obituary follows: Mrs. R. H. Boggs. Mrs. Marie C. Boggs, wife of R.H. Boggs died yesterday morning in her home, Sewickley Heights, after a prolonged illness. She was born at Buhl Mills, Butler County, the daughter of Henry Buhl, Sr., one of the pioneers of the section. In 1867 she and her husband settled in old Allegheny. Mrs. Boggs was widely known for her charities and interest in the social and charitable life of the community. For many years she was actively interested in the Woods Run Settlement House, the Woman's Exchange, the Childrens Colored Home and was a member of the Woman's Club of Sewickley, the Twentieth Century Club, and other women's clubs. She was a member of the Sewickley Presbyterian Church. Besides her husband, she leaves one daughter, William McBride of Sewickley, three sisters, Mrs. Jacob Gelback of Zelienople, Mrs. F.A. Winter of Altoona, and Mrs. Edward Winter of Zelienople; three brothers Henry Buhl Jr., of Pittsburgh; Frederick C. Buhl of Evans City and Benjamin of MO. (Found among the papers of Mrs. Grace Kerr Patterson of New Castle, PA.)

After the death of Russell's first wife in 1919, Russell then married a much younger woman, Mary Walker Nichols of Philadelphia, who according a to a story told by Henry Buhl, Jr.'s executor's son, first trotted him of to Europe, and being very ill upon his return aboard ship to the states, then coerced him into a trip across America instead of entering him into a hospital. Seventy-eight year old Russell H. Boggs died as the result of an injury sustained in California according to the newspaper account. He died in his home in Sewickley, PA. -- five years before his partner in business, Henry Buhl, Jr. The second wife is referred to as Mary Walker CRIQUI in the estate newspaper write-ups which follow, so she evidently remarried soon after. The following article was published in the newspaper: BOGGS ESTATE IS DISTRIBUTED.....Nine Hospitals, other Institutions Receive Bequests. A decree making distribution of personal property in the estate of the late R. H. Boggs, amounting to $1,713,306.98 was handed down in orphan's court yesterday. The fund is $1, 538,122.69. principal and $174,184.129 interest. Mary Walker Criqui, formerly Mary Walker Boggs, executrix, for income and other taxes and charges, the decree apportions to her as executrix $1,224,127.27 in personality unconverted, to be accounted for in a future account to be filed within one year. On half of the balance of the personality also in distributed to her as a legatee under the Boggs will. The share is $179,598.86. The remainder is apportioned as follows: Lavina Buhl, administratrix of the estate on Frederick Buhl; Benjamin S. Buhl, Fredericha Gelbach, Andrew L. Boggs, Mella Clayton, Ella Datt, Dollar Savings & Trust Company, guardian of the estate of Marie B. McBride, a minor, Matilda Winter, Emma Winter and Mella Clayton as executrix of the estate of Lucinda Beam, each $6,530.54. The rest will be on R.H. Boggs or Emma Buhl.
