Descendants of James O'Boland

Generation No. 1

1. JAMES1 O'BOLAND was born in Ireland. He married KATHERINE DINAN. She was born in Ireland.

Notes for J
AMES O'BOLAND:

Born in Ireland, sometime in the late 1700's, James O'Boland is my great-great-great grandfather and has many known descendants. A review of the records in the United States shows many thousands of "Boland" names, likely spread throughout every state, but certainly not all from James. Today, in the year 2000, we can show 8 generations since James O'Boland's time.

We know our Boland family line comes from County Clare, Ireland. (Some specifically from the town of Ennis,Ireland.) Research reveals this county to be the place of the emergence of the O'Boland family name, or O'Beoilain in Gaelic.

The first immigrants with the Boland name arrived in North America in 1764, however the real flood of Irish immigration started after the potato famine in 1845. (In fact, half the population of Ireland left in the 50 years after the famine.) We know that our particular family ancestors arrived only 3 years after the famine, starting in 1848.

It is my great pleasure to share this family history with you. - David Granholm

Some information quoted from the Ancient History of the Distinguished Surname "Boland."

"This great Gaelic family Boland emerged in later years in Clare. Boland, or O'Beoilain in Gaelic, is decended from the Heber line of Irish Kings and they are decended from Mahon, the brother of King Brian Boru who was probably one of ireland's greatest Kings, and who died in the Battle of Clontarf in 1014. Brian Boru was considered by some to be Ireland's 175th Monarch, and he and his brother were born at Kincora, the royal seat of his anchestor. It should be noted that the Herald of Ireland claims that brother's name to be Mahon. The septs (Irish Clann) territories are on Lough Derg and the lake is called Ballybolan. The Clan florished despite the Norman and Cromwellian invasions of Ireland but in the latter disruption of Irish life they were moved and forfeited their territories. The devastation by the religious conflicts of the 17th century caused great hardship on most Irish families. Prominent amongst the family at this time was O'Bolan of county Clare.
The most ancient grant of a Coat of Arms found was: Silver with a red lion and charged on a gold band at the top is a blue eagle displayed. The Crest was: Silver half lion."
Prepared on January, 25, 2001, for this written history by Joseph W. Boland, son of Thomas E., son of James, son of John, son of James.

Child of J
AMES O'BOLAND and KATHERINE DINAN is:
2. i.   JOHN N.2 BOLAND, b. 1815, Ennis, County Claire, Ireland; d. June 25, 1902, Elkader, Iowa.
