Patti and Joe married in 1954 and moved to St. Paul, Minnesota where she worked for the State Welfare Department for several years.
Then they adopted two children, Maureen and Michael at the ages of 3-1/2 years of age. She stayed home and cared for the two children until they were a little older and then went to work for the St. Paul Public Library. While at the library she worked at the front desk in Sun Ray Branch, was secretary for the Manager of all the Branch Libraries. ENNETH JOSEPH BOLAND:
Baptised at St Joseph's Church in Elkader, Iowa on September 30, 1928 and his Godfather was John Roach and his Godmother was Mrs John Roach.

Kenneth was a happy person and was very outgoing yet was very timid in many ways. He was always afraid he was going to say or do the wrong thing so he had to ask whomever what they thought of his ideas. He liked to visit with people and tell about his adventures and find out about yours. He wasn't nosy, just curious and interested.

He always wanted to get married and was afraid he was getting old and would never make it. He didn't want to be an old maid or an unmarried person as so many were in his immediate family. He had unlimited love for his family and children and grandchildren. He died early with cancer.
      Comments from Joe Boland, cousin.

Comments from Kenneth's daughter Cathy (Boland) Polito in June 2001:

Dad could be outgoing but was by nature pretty shy, as were most of the family. Timid doesn't seem to describe him to me. Perhaps humble. He liked the scripture about those who exalt themselves shall be humbled and those who humble themselves shall be exalted. Dad gravitated to outgoing, bold people. The closest to him were not as shy as he, opposites attract. My husband is a bold man. Dad would always tell him to " humble yourself son-of-gun"(his nickname for him). Dad was extremely private. He guarded his privacy like no other I have know. I heard many a lecture on breaking the rules. I found after his death in talking to other relatives, that they really never knew him. They only knew what he wanted them to know. In talking to others I realized his circle was really very small.
About the marriage thing. I asked my Mom. She said he was afraid of marriage failure more than anything else.(as it turns out with good reason) Perhaps he saw some unhappy marriages?? The girls liked him, mother says but she got him. He tried to put her off but like many men they need that final shove and we women are right there to give it. He was dating a girl named Colleen when he met my mom, he ditched her to go after Mom. First they go after you but that marriage thing gives them a pause.... So when it came to women I think he was pretty bold., gee I guess I'm living proof and glad of it!!!!Beware of the quiet ones mom always said.
He also told me of a girl he dated in Dubuque, I'll never forget the name Opal Shunglung, what a name! Mother tells the story of Phil and Ruey dating 5 years!!! And they were no spring chickens either, 29 and 35 when married. When I was little I'd ask her why and she said they were both very shy. Mom said people said of the family that they were very clannish. I found that to be true. Even I at times felt that way, Dad would get with siblings and parents and they would be discussing things and you could tell no one else was to be around.
Dad was very close to parents and siblings. However I felt like his #1 girl and I was after my parents divorced. As far as the raising thing . Yes my stepfather helped raise me but my Dad was my Dad, he was very involved. People marveled his devotion to Jim and I after the divorce. His friends at work would tell him to forget the kids, they won't care someday they will forget you. Statistics show this is correct .But our Dad was there every step of the way whenever he had an opportunity he was there. Dad hated the separation from us and we hated it too. Nothing like your own Dad. My step Dad is a great guy and good grandfather to my kids, I care a lot about him too.

ONALD CLEMENT BOLAND:

Donald was known to some relatives as "the singing cowboy", as he played the guitar and sang frequently. Joseph W. Boland remembers Donald visiting in the early 1940's when Joe was a child in Cox Creek, Iowa, and Don sang for them then. The writer of this note (Dave Granholm) remembers last seeing his Uncle Donald in Omaha, Nebraska about 30 years ago.... and I actually remember the tune and partial words to a song he sang then.... about "honeybees." (I wonder if his children Rodney and Rosie remember that song?)
