Notes for M
ADONNA ANN BOLAND:
Madonna lost her father Clem due to a brain tumor, when she was 10 years old.
At this writing, she remembers.....

When my father was dying, a neighbor snatched up our home for $100 in back taxes my folks couldn't pay. I rode in the ambulance that took my dad to our rented house. I will never forget the bewilderment in his eyes as he drifted in and out of consciousness.

In happier (but not richer) times.....
This episode remains vividly in my mind. During the drastic downfall of the 30's when I was about 8 years old, our only source of drinking water was a pump outside our house. Eventually it became unsafe to drink from & dried up. One evening, my dad Clem took me with him in the car to fill two large milk cans with water at the City Park. In order to start the car, the motor had to be "turned over" or cranked. Dad stood in front of the car cranking it while I sat high up on the front seat working the throttle (as he instructed), all the time hoping and praying he wouldn't be run over. Soon as the motor started, I quickly moved over so dad could jump into the driver's seat and keep it running and off we went. Now the car was unlicensed and Clem spotted a patrolman in the distance. He quickly turned into the park and "ditched" him just in time. Clem said, "I fooled him." It's absolutely necessary to have water but with no money to license a car to get it, is something in itself. Hard to believe times were that bad. As we drove back home in the dark, avoiding arrest and with two cans of life-giving water, I must have thought, "Well done, dad."

ALTER LAWRENCE GRANHOLM:
Walter Lawrence Granholm was born in a small house in north Omaha near 39th & Browne Street. He was named Valdemar Lawrence Granholm. He was named after an uncle (Julius' brother) who died at sea in 1918 going down with a ship during WWI. His first name was later "Americanized" to Walter. Valdemar Grønholm, Walt's namesake, also had a son named Valdemar. At this writing, Valdemar Grønholm, Walt's cousin, is 80 years old and lives in København, Denmark. Walter was a career lithographer (printer) and owned a business in Omaha called Bradley Printing Company.

Interestingly enough, later in life, Walter & Donna (Madonna) bought a house about 3 blocks from the 39th & Browne address where Walter was born (at 3702 Saratoga Street) and lived in the house for 33 years! (The 3702 Saratoga house was purchased from Walter's cousin, Robert Engskov.)

Marriage Notes for M
ADONNA BOLAND and WALTER GRANHOLM:

Donna had taken the opportunity during the WWII years to move to southern California to live with her older sister, Alice, while still in high school. She loved it!!! Unfortunately, due to her sister's financial situation, Donna had to return to her little home town of Garner, Iowa to finish her senior year of high school. All she could think of was getting back to California and that is exactly what she did after graduation. After a little bit of time in California Donna went to Omaha to help out another one of her sisters, Sylvia, who was having a baby. It was just going to be a temporary stop... and then back to California.

While in Omaha, Sylvia's husband, Robert Flanagan, introduced Donna to a nice young guy named Walt Granholm who was just out of the Navy. Well.... Donna never did move back to California! (They were married February 12, 1949 at Sacred Heart Church in Omaha.)
