DANIEL MUNROE BOONE August 30, 1894 - Daniel M. Boone has participated in and given guidance to so many community activities that, more than many others, he justly merits the title of civic leader. Through his service, first as a banker, and then as a real estate man, he has contributed much to the growth and prosperity of the city. He has given leadership to numerous civic organizations, has served as the commissioner of the Little Rock Municipal Water Works and, in the social and recreational life of the community, has been president of the Little Rock Country Club. In addition, Mr. Boone has fathered a family which is making it own contributuion and establishing its own reputation. Daniel Munroe Boone was born in Lonoke, Arkansas, on August 30, 1895. His education has been thorough and varied. He first attended the public schools of his birthplace. Then he traveled nearly 2000 miles to enter Keith's Preparatory School, at Boston, Massachusetts. On completing a course there he travelled 2000 miles back to attend the University of Arkansas. He completed his education at the University of Missouri, where he took a general academic course, with a minor in law. His degree was in general arts and sciences. His first position was as manager of the L.W. Munroe Estate. This was the estate of his maternal grandfather, who settld in Lonoke in the early part of the nineteenth century. Daniel Munroe Boone's mother was Mattie (Munroe) Boone, who was born in Brownsville, Arkansas, on March 15, 1865. Her husband, the father of Daniel, was Daniel Ratcliffe Boone, born in Granada, Mississippi , on June 12, 1856. He was a banker and planter. Educated in grade schhols he started his career by teaching in Texas. On his removal to Arkansas, he settled at Lonoke and became one of the pioneer farmers of the area. His father is buried at Lonoke while his mother who died at ane early age when Daniel was an infant is buried in the family plot in Hernando, Mississippi. The children of the marriage of Daniel Ratcliffe Boone and Mattie (Munroe) Boone are, besides Daniel Munroe Boone, Louise Boone Boyd, Lemuel White, Allie Mae, and William Boykin Boone; all are now deceased. After Daniel Munroe Boone had managed the estate of his maternal grandfather, he became assistant cashier of the England National Bank at Little Rock, later succeeding to the vice-presidency of the Exchange National Bank at Little Rock. He held this post until 1928, when he enetered the real estate business to look after the family interests, afterwards expanding his interests and doing much to hasten the developement of the city. Then he served a seven year term as commissioner of the Little Rock Municipal Water Works, a term which expired in 1944 and during which he further aided in the growth of the community. Two years he was president of the Little Rock Country Club. On January 16, 1920 Daniel Munroe Boone and Mabel Morgan Lafferty were married in Little Rock. Mrs. Boone is a graduate of St. Mary's Academy of Little Rock and the Convent of the Visitation, St. Louis, Missouri. At both of these she majored in music, for which she has a renowned talent. She is an active worker in the Catholic Church, in the Junior Little League of Little Rock Chapter of the American Red Cross, and the United Service Organizations . Three children have been born to the marriage - Betty Rose Boone, Daniel Munroe Boone, Jr., Thomas Lafferty Boone. The daughter Betty, is married to A.B. Thomas, who in World War II was a pilot with the Army Air Forces and was planning, with his wife, to establish a posttwar home in Joplin, Missouri; they have a son and daughter, Michael and Susan Thomas. Mrs. Thomas was educated at St. Mary's Academy in Little Rock and in Paris and various Italian cities; she travels extensively throughout Europe. Daniel Munroe Boone, Jr. , was, like his brother-in-law, a pilot in the Army Air Forces, and in the summer of 1945, was serving overseas. He is a graduate of the Catholic High School of Little Rock and had been at the University of Arkansas for two years when he enlisted as an aviation cadet. Thomas Lafferty Boone, the youngest son, is a graduate of Catholic High School; after receiving his appointment and graduation to the Merchant Marine Academy in Kingspoint, New York, he enlisted in the United States Navy and thus joined his brother-in-law and brother in the service of the nation in World War II. The father of these young people - Daniel Munroe Boone, Sr. - is an active Democrat who gives leadership in the Little Rock Country Club and the Little Rock Club, and Little Rock Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber of Commerce of the United States. His hobbies are fishing, golf, and hunting. Mr. Boone grows constantly in importance in Arkansas' capitol city and is claimed by his fellow citizens as among their first citizens. ---From "Annals of Arkansas" pps. 1610-11. Resigned to establish Boone Insurance Agency and retained control until he turned bussiness over to his son, Thomas Lafferty Boone, to manage farms in Lonoke and Mississippi Counties, other real estate. Was member of first Municipal Water Works board. Twice president of Little Rock Country Club; member of Dog Island Duck Club in Arkansas. Served eight months in United States Army, World War I, Camp Robinson, after twice appealing 4F classification. Education Lonoke Schools, University of Arkansas, graduate University of Missouri Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Had experience of changing his address and postman without moving his desk, when he leased his building at Fifth and Main to the National Shirt Shop and, in remodeling, the stairway was moved from Main to Fifth Street side of building. Married Mabel Lafferty, Little Rock, February 11, 1920. Children, Betty Rose Boone, wife of A.B. Thomas, Topeka, Kansas, Daniel Munroe Boone, Jr. , pilot in both WW II and Korean War, now special agent for America Fore Insurance Group, Litte Rock, Thomas Lafferty Boone, head of Boone Insurrance Agency.
