William D. Munroe, a farmer of Hickory With, was born June 18, 1831 in Cumberland County, Virginia and is one of three sons and three daughters born to David W. and Mahala C. (Dowdy) Munroe. Our subject, two brothers and a sister are the surviving members of this family. The father was born in Marlboro, Mass., March 22, 1798, and the mother in Cumberland County, Va, May 22, 1806, where they married and followed the tailor's trade until December. 1836, when they came to Fayette County, located on the farm where our subject now resides and owns, and followed farming in connection with their trade, until the father died April 5, 1865. The mother is living with our subject. William D. Munroe remained at home until 1849, then went to Memphis and clerked for a year, then spent four years clerking near Somerville, and in the Spring of 1850 bought a half interest in a stock of merchandise at Desha County, Ark., and when the War commenced moved the stock to Brownsville, Ark.; but his father's death caused hime to move to Tennessee to be with his mother, In 1862 Mr. Munroe entered the Confederate service, joining the Twelfth Tennessee Calvary, and a year later was taken prisoner and held several moths, was then released and returned home, where he has since remained, excepting three years spent in merchandising in Marshall County, Miss., and two years later at Lonoke, Ark. He owns thirty acres in the home tract, and 180 in another tract in Fayette County. Mr. Munroe has never married; his mother and sister live with him, and they all belong to Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Politically he is a Democrat, and is an industrious upright man.
