Subject: [BOZEMAN-L] Detective Steve!
Date: Sun, 26 Apr 1998 17:32:16 EDT
Hi, Steve, and congratulations on your wonderful detective work in putting
together the Bozeman family of Northamption Co., NC, with which I am in
complete agreement. Let me give you a little background on why I was prowling
around in the records of Northampton Co. and became curious about the Mike
Boseman there in the first place. Much of this will not be of high interest to
the Bozeman group as a whole, but if I promise not to do this too often I am
hoping that it will not be out of place to send this message to the entire
group, with my permission to hit the delete button at any time.
John Bullock is found in the records of Northampton Co. as early as 1786, and
he made his will there on 29 Sept. 1789 in which he names sons as Thomas and
James and Mary was a daughter. Two unnamed daughters were married to Shadrack
Lassiter and John Langston. A witness to the will was Exum Powell, who carried
two Isle of Wight (IOW) surnames. There is no question in my mind that this
John Bullock is from IOW and is either the son or the grandson of Mary Boazman
Bullock.
Going back in time a bit and picking up that earlier story, Mary Boazman (d/o
Ralph Boazman, Sr.) married Henry Allen in 1693. Aften Henry's death, she had
married Thomas Bullock by 1695. Thomas died in 1709, leaving six minor Bullock
children: Thomas, James, William, John, Joseph, and Sarah. Looking at the John
Bullock family above (with children named Thomas, Mary, and James) gives a
strong hint that they come from the IOW family. Also, the daughter Sarah
Bullock of Thomas in IOW married Jacob Powell on 3 March 1739 in IOW. A Jacob
Powell is found in the 1790 census of Northampton Co, who probably had some
connection to the Exum Powell who witnessed the will of John Bullock in 1789.
In Northampton Co. between 1797 and 1800, a Thomas Bullock (likely the son of
John above) and a Ricks Lawrence were collecting money to pass to the orphans
of William Bridgers, who was probably from the Bridger family of IOW. Now this
Ricks Lawrence is interesting. His father was John Lawrence and his mother was
Martha Ricks (d/o Abraham Ricks), thus he became Ricks Lawrence. This John
Lawrence eventually owned all 400 acres of the land that had once belonged to
Anthony Branch on the Western Branch of the Nansemond River, lying on the
boundary between IOW and Nansemond Co.
The story of this 400 acres is also interesting. Between 1693 and 1753, it was
split into four parts. These parts passed through the hands of Mary Boazman
Allen Bullock, Ralph Boazman, Jr, Samuel Boazman, and Thomas Bullock, Jr., but
by 1769 all of this land had been bought up by John Lawrence. (By the way, at
least 100 acres of this land passed through the hands of John Frizzell in 1746
- any connection here, Steve?).
John Lawrence also bought a separate piece of adjacent land from John Bullock
in 1751. This John or his son is likely to be the person who died in 1789
Northampton. Thus, in Northampton around 1790, we have Ricks Lawrence (whose
father bought up all of the Anthony Branch lands) connected with Thomas
Bullock (b. before 1775 & s/o John) and we have Jacob Powell, who was likely
the son-in-law, or grandson of Mary Boazman Bullock. Clearly, these were IOW
folks.
Moving into Northampton by 1820 was the Mike Boseman, whom I had asked about,
never imagining that Steve would put the whole family together. Steve has now
presented a strong argument that he was the Micajah Boazman found in 1810
Southampton Co., VA. Two other people of interest found in 1820 Northampton
were Thomas and Norman Branch (b. 1776-1794). Could these two be related to
Anthony Branch, whose lands were bought up by the father of the Ricks Lawrence
also found in 1820 Northampton? Stay tuned, folks, and give Steve a few days
to work some more magic!
The location of this Micajah Boazman in Southampton Co., VA, in 1810 is also
of interest. My Bullock gggg-grandfather was Thomas and Mary Boazman Bullock's
son James. James Bullock acquired land on Flag Run in Nottoway Parish of IOW
between 1717 and 1723. In 1749, Nottoway Parish of IOW was split off to make
Southampton Co. The land owned by James Bullock was near the old town of
Jerusalem, which is now know as Courtland. Living near this same area in the
1720s or before were: Henry Boazman, William Mayo, Richard Drake, and Joseph
Jackson, whom I will mention again later.
James Bullock sold his land on Flag Run in 1730 to George Washington (not THE
GEORGE) and shows up in the records of Bertie Co. between 1732 and 1759. A
part of Bertie was split off to form Northampton Co. in 1741, but James
apparently did not live in this part. By 1762, James Bullock had moved into an
area near the boundaries of Pitt, Edgecombe, and Martin Counties, with Bullock
records being found in all three.
Wherever I have found my Bullock line, there have usually been Boazmans
present there as well. It could be a coincidence, but this has made me think
that these Bozemans were connected to the IOW families. We have already talked
about the Bullocks and Bozemans in Northampton, and James Boazman (from whom
several in our group descend) was present in Edgecombe near some of my Bullock
line there.
Mentioning some other examples. James Bullock (s/o John) was listed in the
1790 census of Northampton, but he had left before 1810 (leaving brother
Thomas there). A James Bullock has moved into Wilkinson Co., GA. before 1820,
and mentioned in the 1820 land lottery of that county was the widow Sarah
Bozeman and a Thomas Bozeman (b. 1791-1800), who could be her son. The mother
of this James Bullock was said in a history of Wilkinson Co. to be the son of
a Sarah Mayo, and the William Mayo family had lived near my earlier James
Bullock ancestor on Flag Run in present-day Southampton Co a good 100 years
earlier.
Not far away from Wilkinson Co., in Jefferson Co., GA, Ephraim Bullock (s/o my
James & found in the records of Martin Co., NC, between 1779 and 1787) had
showed up on the tax records by 1805, at which time a James Bozeman was clerk
of the court there (Could this James be the son of the James in Edgecombe?).
He was still there in 1811 when Ephraim Bullock and his five grown children
received a passport to travel through the Indian Nation to "the Western
Countries."
I hope that they made it, because I have never found a trace of Ephraim or his
children thereafter. I am interested to learn more about the James Bozeman in
1805 Jefferson Co and the widow Sarah Bozeman and Thomas Bozeman in Wilkinson
Co., so maybe we can get Steve interested in this new project.
Well, this pretty much finishes up my story of Bozeman and Bullock
connections, except for a thing or two that I have found in running the names
that Steve has listed in his record of the descendants of Benjamin Bozeman
(likely father of Micajah Bozeman of Northampton) through my Bullock file.
First, Steve says that Benjamin's daughter Sally married John Cartwright on 15
March 1787 in Southampton Co., VA. Well, on 13 July 1769, Jacob Johnston and
his son Amos sold 80 acres of land on Peachtree Branch in Edgecombe Co. to a
John Cartwright, as witnessed by John Bullock, Jonas Johnston, and Peter
Cartwright. Could this be the same John Cartwright (or his father) who
returned to Southampton Co in 1787 to marry Sally Bozeman, and is this John
Bullock the person who died in Northampton in 1789?
Steve also mentions that Lucy Boazman (d/o Micajah) married Hines Drake on 19
April 1823 in Northampton and that his son, Micajah W. Bozeman, married
Rebecca Jackson there on 19 April 1823. This has caused me to wonder how these
families might be connected to the Richard Drake and Joseph Jackson who lived
near James Bullock on Flag Run in 1720s IOW, later to become Southampton Co.
For those few folks into big-time speculation, who haven't hit the delete
button by now, isn't all of this FUN? My best regards, Ron Bullock
