Subject: [BOZEMAN-L] Who I am, some more London research
Date: Sat, 27 Feb 1999 16:32:23 -0500
Hello, this is Mac Bozman. Who am I? about 47 yrs. old, work as
aScenic and Lighting designer at Shenandoah Conservatory/Shenandoah
U. Winchester, VA. We are a professional theatre training program.
Produce 9 full scale shows in academic year, and 4 more in
professional summer stock comp. Lots of musicals.(There is no such
thing as a small muscial except Fantastics which we have never done).
Often work 7 days a week, and nights, so tough to do as much
genealogy as I would like. Started when I was in H.S. and college,
had to quit because of work, got back into it 5 yrs. ago. Once I
found the Peter Coldham book with my Edward(1) just had to go to
London to find out his crime. Have made two trips to London to
research, total of about 3 weeks. Rather do genealogy than ski or
sit on a beach. Research in London means several libraries,
Guildhall, Corp. of London, Soc. of Genealogists, Public Records
Office, National, (may now have moved all PRO to Kew.) and county
PROs. Sometimes more than usual problems like documents unavailable
because too fragile, and no microfilm, or you only have two days left
and it will take 4 days to bring the items out of storage somewhere
else and get to the reading room. Some reasearch nicelly indexed,
some not. Some parrish records transcribed and indexed, some not.
There were only! 93 parrishes in the original walled city of London
and then 14 immediately outside the wall, more as you go farther
away. Anyway, I only said it was interesting that some of the
names, William, Ralph, Ambrose, Thomas and Henry are also early VA/MD
names. I know some of the math does not work.
I will start at the earliest I know and try to remember to cite
sources.
1568, Return of Aliens in London, includes two servents of Jaques
Bosman. They are members of the Dutch Church. (the Dutch immigrants
were awarded their own church, Austin Friars, aka, the Dutch Church.)
Have never found anything more of this Jaques.
1587 Hendrick Bosman m. Trynken Janssen, Dutch Church marriages.
1591-1597 3 children bap. Dutch Church records, father Hendrick B.
Judith-1591, Sara-1594, Henricus,-1597. Mother not named,( she is
almost never identified)
1594 Hen. Bosman and wife liveing in Aldgate St. Return of Aliens in
L. Hugonnaunt Soc. Vol X
1598 Widow Bosman, Aldgate Ward, St. Katherine Chrechurch Parrish,
paid 1st subsidy to Q. Eliz.(could she be widow of missing Jaques,
parents of Hendrick?)
1599 Henric Bosman, Aldgate Ward, St. K. C. Parrish, paid 2nd subsidy
to Q. Eliz. (Both of above, Return. of Aliens, L. v. 3)
1612 Henrick Bosman m. Creskin Scheel, Dutch C.Records
1613 Henrick Bosman of Sukerlof Alley signs an attestment, Dutch C.
records
1613 Raulf Bosman m. Jane Gaskin St. Nicolas Cole Parrish
1613 Robert Bosman m. Cisely Coulter
(I think there is a good case for Raulf and Robert to be older sons
of Hendrick, but that will come.)
1617 Return of 1617, Dutch Church Records, vol 10, No. 12 two
entries, that is not ususal, the two entries are in seperate
sections, I suspect they did not ask enough questons the first round.
The info. is not entirely contridictory given hand writing, accents,
etc. or maybe there are two H.B.s both silk twisters but I doublt
it. anyway,
Hendrick Bosman,Suggarloof Alley, silkwynder, his wyfe English,
dwelt here 30 yrs.
Hendrick Bosman, silketwister, dwelled here 37 yrs.
1626 Henry Bosman m. Eliz. Short, Dau. of Margary Short at St.
Benets, Paul's Wharf. H.B. is a "citizen and clothworker " (Boyd;s
Inhabitants of London) This I suspect is the child Henricus b. 1597
with father Hendrick, of the Dutch Church records.
to 1634 H.B. and Eliz. have 7 children, only Ralf, bap. 28 Feb. 1629
lives to adult.
H.B. remaries, but who? and to 1658 has 8 more child. only 4(at best)
live to adult. This is all from tracking the baptisms and burials of
St. Benets, Pauls Wharf Parrish records
1651 Margary Short dies, mom. of Eliz. Short Bosman. In her will,
she names s-in-l, Henry Bosman, gr.child Raulf, his cousin Gervase
Bosman(Boyds Inhabitants of London) The Robert Bosman who m. Cisely
Coulter has a son or grandson Jarves b. 1634. I dont know if the
Robert Bosman who married Dorthy Stringer in 1633 is the first Robert
or a son, also named Robert(St. Mary Mag. Old Fish St. Parrish)
1655 Raulf Bosman m. Jane Whitmore, widow. St. Michael of Cornhill
Parrish rec. ident. Raulf as son of Henry, Raulf is a freeman and
draper. He began apprecticship in 1648.(Drapers guild rec.) I have
not been able to track him farther.
1662, 9 Ap. Henry Bosman, bur. St. Benets, Pauls wharf.
Some of this material is also in the IGI, however, I only use it to
locate the parrish and then go to the parrish records. The IGI does
not list deaths, so if you used only it, you would not get all the
information. Sometimes the parrish is wrongly listed(I dont know
how). For ex. the IGI lists children of Raulf who m. Jane Gaskin in
1613 as born in St. James Garrlick. Parrish, but they are really in
Holy Trinity. Let me know what you think, more later. Best wishes,
Mac
