Notes for Charles Edward Bradbury II: Obituary from Bangor Daily Commercial Aug 23, 1938 "Local Man In Tragic Death Charles Bradbury, 27, Fatally Injured By Fall of Heavy Newsprint Roll Today Charles Edward Bradbury, 27, was crushed to death this morning at about 7 o'clock at North Bangor railroad station while engaged in transferring heavy rolls of newsprint to a truck for conveyance into town. A roll slipped as it was being moved and struck Bradbury down, crushing his chest. He was rushed to Eastern Maine General Hospital in this city but passed away soon after arrival. Official Investigation: Dr. H C Schribner a county medical examiner was called to the hospital for an official investigation. He pronounced death due to the crushing of the chest. James Silke and Roy Pinkham of this city employees of the Bradbury concern of trucking were working with Bradbury. At police headquarters James Silke told a sad story of the tragic accident to safety inspector McClay for the record. He stated that they were moving a three-quarter roll of paper weighing 933 pounds from the railroad car to the freight shed when the bridge of planks between the car and shed slipped. Silk was pushing the roll and when the iron end of the bridge slipped Bradbury and LeRoy Pinkham were precipitated to the ground, the roll pinning Bradbury down and holding Pinkham so he could not move. Pinkham was able to roll the paper away, however, to secure his release and that of Bradbury. Strange to relate, Bradbury attempted to get up but collapsed and was caught by Pinkham. Silk and Pinkham placed the injured man in the truck and drove with all haste to the hospital in Bangor. Bradbury was unconscious, but was breathing heavily. He died soon after being taken into the hospital. Pinkham was somewhat injured. It was be lived that both Pinkham and Bradbury would have been killed if they had been handling a full size roll weighing 1400 pounds. The plank bridge used for a roll way between the shed and car has iron plates at each end and at the end placed in the freight car the iron slid on the iron plate in the car. The deceased resided at 60 Curve street. He is survived by his wife, Verna F; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred C Bradbury; a brother, F. Clayton Bradbury, Jr.; four aunts, Mrs James Silke, Mrs Alma Brown, Mrs John Campbell and Mrs Annie McKinney, the latter residing in Auburn, and a cousin Miss Thelma Silk, as well as more distant relatives. Mr Bradbury was a member of the Universalist Church and he was held in very high regard among his associates and a large number of friends. He was noted as an athlete years ago, having been an outstanding basketball player when in Bangor High School, also in Baseball. He played softball with the Merrill Trust Co team this summer. The shocking tragedy cast a feeling of sorrow over a large circle of friends and acquaintances. The time of the funeral services will be announced." |
