Descendants of Thomas Illingworth

Generation No. 3

7. JOSHUA13 ILLINGWORTH (CAIN COCKCROFT12, THOMAS11, JOHN10, WILLIAM9, JOHN8, ROBERT7, JAMES6, JAMES5, THOMAS4, RALPH3, RICHARD2, RICHARD1) was born 1846 in Bradford, York, England. He married ANNIE MARIA PYBUS March 1870 in Ripon, York. vol. 9a page 88, daughter of THOMAS PYBUS and JANE MALLABY. She was born December 1851 in Bedale, York, England.

Notes for J
OSHUA ILLINGWORTH:
Joshua is listed in the 1881 Census as boarding with Frederick S. and Charlotte J. Toft at 8 West Dock
Terrace, Holy Trinity, Kingston-upon-Hull, York, England with two of his six children, namely Thomas E. and Adelaide J. Illingworth. He was a musician, instrument unknown, so he probably travelled around
quite a lot.

Joshua was also a Chorister and Lay Clerk at Ripon Cathedral during his time in Ripon.

The following poem I wrote based on a story passed down in my mothers book "It Seemed Like Yesterday" written under her maiden name, Rhoda Winstanley.

Joshua

My Great, Great Grandpa Joshua,
A lay Clerk and Chorister was he
For a time at Ripon Cathedral,
From a musical family you see.

Its said he didn't like cuss words
A Victorian Churchman you know,
So instead, he invented his own kind
Another string, to add to his bow.

One day the family cat darted
Across the Parlour room floor,
Where Joshua also had started
Barefoot, to answer the door.

The cat very nearly did trip him
And Joshua lashed out with his foot,
But the cat dodged around and escaped him
The table leg instead met his foot.

Poor Joshua hopped round the room
Nursing bruised toes in his hands,
And red faced he started to fume
An expletive his mishap demands.

So, the very next minute
Our Joshua was heard to say,
"Oh Deggers, Oh Deggers, Oh Deggers"
And the family's poor cat ran away.
