2. HUGH2 GORITY (HUGH1) was born 1830 in County Mayo,Ireland, and died April 04, 1890 in Altoona, Pa. - St. John's Cem., Sec. F. lot 57. He married ANNA HALTON in Cherry Tree, Pa, daughter of JOHN HALTON and JANE ?. She was born September 15, 1836, and died April 23, 1920 in Altoona, Pa. - St. John's Cem., Sec. F. lot 57.

UGH GORITY:
Hugh Gority was born in Ireland. His father Hugh and mother Mary McDermott. Hugh immigrated to the United States in 1852 and arrived in the month of August of the same year. A Declaration of Intent was filed September 2, 1854 in Blair County, Pennsylvania, and Hugh took the oath on August 9,1858 before witnesses John McGrath and Patrick Nash. Hugh's brother John followed him a year later in 1853 and after 5 years in the United States filed a Declaration of Intent for citizenship on August 9, 1858. David Caldwell, Prothonotary, court of Common Pleas, Huntingdon County, Penn., 24th Judicial District, August 9, 1858. The above information was taken from the records at Blair County and Huntingdon County Court Houses.

According to a letter of reply from Beatrice Gibboney the family name was changed from Gogherty to a simpler form. She also states that Hugh and John came from County Mayo and not Meath. John was 20 years old when he arrived in this country and married Elizabeth (Betty) Stapleton. They lived on West Chestnut Avenue St. in Altoona, Blair County, Penn. Margaret was their only child. Margaret married John Gibboney and they moved to Tacoma, Washington and had 3 children;

John Francis 1890, a diocesan priest
Beatrice 1893, a school teacher
Marion, died at the age of 9

According to Beatrice there were only the two brothers who came to the United States from this family.

Hugh and Anna (Halton) Gority purchased a house located at 1201 17th Street, Altoona, Pa. for $200 on April 16,1868. The deed was recorded on April 15,1882. The property was purchased from Louden.

Mr. Hugh Gority
Yesterday afternoon at 20 minutes passed 12, Mr. Hugh Gorrity of No. 1201-17 St. died after many weeks of suffering of cancer of the stomach aged 65 years. Mr. Gorrity was a member of St. John's Literary and Benovolent Society. Ther funeral will take place at St. John's Catholic Church where a Requium Mass will celebrate at 9 o'clock. Internment in St. John's Cemetary.

April 23, 1920

Mrs. Anna Gority, widow of Hugh Gority died at 1 o'clock this morning at the family home 1201-17 St. of deseases incident to old age.
She was of ill health for some time. A native of Ireland, born Sept. 15,1836, daughter of John and Jane Halton, and was the last member of her family. She came to Altoona in 1863 and affialated herself with St. John's Pro Cathedral being one of the oldest members of the church.
Surviving are six children, Margaret and John both of the city. Sister Beatrice of the Sister of Charity, Mrs. John Connor of Pittsburgh, James and Miss. A. Regina Gority both of Altoona. Funeral at St. John's and buried at St. John's cemetary.

Elizabeth E. Gority, daughter of Mr. Anna Gority died at 9:30 Saturday evening at the residence of her mother 1201-17 St. She was age 19. For a year past she had been in failing health. In May she was brought to her home from Pittsburgh where she was living and where she held a position as an organist at St. James Catholic Church, West End for 3 years prier to her illness. After being brought home from Pittsburgh, she was taken to Good Semaritan Hospital, Cinn, Ohio and was under treatment at that hospital for 5 weeks, but consumption could not be checked and she was brought back home where she died. Beside her mother she is survived by 3 sisters and 4 brothers. She was buried at St. John's Cemetary. Funeral at St. John's Catholic Church at 10:30.
