Descendants of Johannn Daniel Buchmuller

Generation No. 1

1. JOHANNN DANIEL3 BUCHMULLER (JOSEPHUS2, MARTINUS1)1 was born October 11, 1812 in Baden, Germany. He married FRANCIS GRAMLICH1 April 03, 1850 in St Louis, Missouri1, daughter of JOHANN GRAMLICH and EVA LIEDEL. She was born March 29, 1822 in Ostringen, Baden Germany1, and died April 19, 1882 in Phenix TWNSHP, Henry County, Illinois.

Notes for JOHANNN DANIEL BUCHMULLER:

My research of John Danniel Buchmuller/Buchmiller began many years ago. In a ledger book I inherited that was originally purchased by my great-grandfather, German Buchmuller/Buchmiller, I found an obituary of "John Daniel Buchmiller, Jr". For years I asked members of my father's generation who he was. No one knew anything about him. He didn't show up in my family records. I surmised he must be related to me in some way, or his obituary wouldn't be in the book. The search was on.

It took me a long time to prove this gentleman was a direct descendant of Martinus Buchmuller of Ostringen, Baden; the same person that my great grandfather German Buchmuller was. I spend countless hours going through records of all kinds. I was lucky to have made contact with the wonderful people at the Geneseo, Illinois library, especially Linda Flatt, who helped me collect records and obituaries concerning the family. The same can be said of the fine folks at the Greene County Iowa Genealogical society, namely Shirley Ross and Valerie Ogren. A special thanks goes to Judith Linenfelser, wife of Charles Linenfelser, another direct descendant of German Buchmiller. Thanks to her her diligent research, I now have proof that the lost family of Johann Daniel Buchmuller/Buchmiller belongs to us!

John's wife Francis was the daughter of Johann Bartholomous Gramlich of Ostringen, who was a brother to Maria Anna Gramlich, wife of Joseph Buchmuller, father of German Buchmiller. Hence, Francis and Johann Daniel were aunt and uncle to my German Buchmuller on both sides of the family. It is assumed at this time, from the records searched so far, that all the Buchmullers in Ostringen were members of the same family.

Notes for AMANDA DELANA WRIGHT:

DEATH SUMMONS JEFFERSON MOTHER:

Amanda Delanna Wright was born on the 9th day of December, 1873. She united with the Church of Christ in young girlhood and continued in the faith until the end. She was united in marriage to Herman Buchmiller at the home of Rev. Irving Wright on the 14th day of March, 1892, and they have resided within a few miles of their present home ever since.

She has been in ill health for many years. Her devotion to her home was apparent to all who knew her. The end came at 6:30pm on the 14th day of June, 1922.

Aside from her husband and mother who survive, are a brother, Monroe Wright of Jefferson, and four sisters, Mrs. John Buchmiller and Mrs Frank Buchmiller, both of Jefferson. Mrs. John Keys Nevada, Iowa, and Mrs. Robert Reynolds of Rockwell City. There are many other near relatives, friends and neighbors who mourn her departure.

She was 49 years, 6 months and 5 days old, and was widely known in this community where she had long resided.

Funeral services were held in the Church of Christ on Friday, June 16 at 2:30pm, with services by Rev. C. V. Pence. There were many relatives and friends of a lifetime who filled the large church to overflowing, and the floral offering was both profuse and beautiful as a final tribute to her memory. She was a member of the Jefferson congregation for the past year.

The Slininger Funeral Home had charge of the funeral and burial which was made that afternoon in the beautiful cemetery just east of Jefferson. Serving relatives from other points were attendants and the sympathy of the community goes out to the family in their bereavement.

FROM A NEWSPAPER ARTICLE:

Suffering for many years for which she depended on tablets for relief, Mrs. Herman Buchmiller took too large a dose last week, which resulted in her death Wednesday.

Mrs. Buchmiller had been in poor health, taking medicine everyday for twelve years. She sent away for pain medicine and had morphine tablets, which were used to help her sleep. Wednesday in the morning she began taking pain tablets, and kept taking them until she had taken forty-five of one kind, and a quantity of two others. She then told Mr. Buchmiller what she had done and he called Dr. Young a little before 9 o'clock in the morning. As soon as the doctor reached the home and was told what had been done, he called Dr. Black immediately, but the drugs had entered the blood too thoroughly before the doctors got there, and so she quietly fell asleep, with the end coming about 6:30 in the evening.[John Daniel Buchmiller.FTW]

2. EDWARD SAMUEL4 BUCHMILLER (JOHANNN DANIEL3 BUCHMULLER, JOSEPHUS2, MARTINUS1) was born January 10, 1853 in Phenix Township, Henry County, Ill., and died September 14, 1926 in Jefferson, Iowa/Jefferson, Greene Co., IA. He married VALARIA YOUNG1 June 22, 1873 in Henry County, Illinois1, daughter of FELIX YOUNG and CATHERINE BRITON. She was born August 12, 18551, and died November 27, 1925 in Jefferson, Iowa1.

Notes for EDWARD SAMUEL BUCHMILLER:

FROM HIS OBITUARY:

Edward Samuel Buchmiller was born in Phoenix township, Henry county Illinois, on January 10, 1853, and died September 14, 1926, at the age of 73 years, 8 months and 4 days.

Edward and Valaria Young were wedded June 22, 1873, and they went to housekeeping in their home locality in Henry county, Illinois. In the year 1875 they came to Greene county where they purchased a farm in Bristol township, and upon this tract of land they made their home for forty years. In 1915 they moved to Jefferson.

To them were born eight children, six of whom are still living as follows; Richard M Buchmiller of Jefferson, Mrs. Delia Mischke of Farlin, Mrs. Roxie Walter of Jefferson, Mrs. Radah Reckard and Miss Huldah Buchmiller of Detroit and Mrs. Gladys Smith of Jefferson. One son John, and a daughter Mrs. Ethel Russell died several years ago. He also leaves to mourn three brothers and two sister, John, Herman, and Frank Buchmiller and Mrs. A. F. Knapper, and Mrs. E. A. Cairns, all of Greene county.

The deceased was a member of the Baptist Church, at Farlin, he and his wife having been united with this body thirty years ago. Besides their own family he and his faithful wife took to their home and care, four grandchildren, who found in them loving and attentive guardians in place of their mother, who died thirteen years ago.

During his illness of the past few weeks he was thoroughly resigned, anxious and willing that the end should come. He and his life companion met first as small children in the school of the old Illinois home, learned there to love and admire each other. So their reuniting in another and happier land comes as a blessed benediction upon their faith in each other and their faith in God, while here upon earth. Both will be missed for many a day, not only by these near and dear to them by the ties of nature, but also by countless ones who have known them as friends and neighbors throughout the years.

She was born June 25, 1856 in Rock Island County, Illinois, and died November 09, 1951 in St Joseph Cemetery, Grant Township, Jefferson, Iowa.

Notes for JOSEPH BUCHMILLER:

FROM HIS OBITUARY:

Joseph Buchmiller, one of Bristol township's well known farmers, passed away last Friday evening shortly before 10 o'clock. Mr. Buchmiller had been ill for some time, suffering from diabetes, and, while death has seemed inevitable, his passing came so suddenly that friends and relatives were grief stricken beyond measure.

Mr. Buchmiller was the first one of the family of brothers and sisters to pass away. He was one of eight children, consisting of five boys and three girls, being the second boy. It is said to his everlasting credit that he never touched either whiskey or tobacco in his life, and at last, when liquor was prescribed for him, he refused to take it, preferring, as he said, to die with a clear record, upon the question of drink.

Mr Buchmiller was a great lover of his family, and, probably in their lives together, he was never absent from home all night more than two or three times. He was a man of peace, rarely rarely having a disagreement with any one, and then in the most friendly manner. He never had a lawsuit, nor sued any one, and was never a witness to a lawsuit.

Knowing death would come to him he went about his earthly preparations with calmness and judgement, naming those who were to act as pallbearers, and requesting that the funeral services should be conducted by his former pastor, Rev. Father Cooke, now of Storm Lake Catholic Church. The plans were completed as he desired, the funeral being held from St. Joseph's Catholic church, in Jefferson, on Monday morning. The pall bearers were: Thomas Williams, Peter Sabus, Thomas Ftzpatrick, John Ferrll, M. T. Condon and Wm. Minihan.

Joseph Buchmiller was born in Henry county, Illinois, March 29, 1856. He was aged 56 years and 27 days. He was married to Mary A. Scherschell of Rock Island county, Illinois, May 6, 1877, at Geneseo, Illinois, near the place they lived for 3 years when they moved to Greene county, Iowa, where they lived for thirty years.

To this union were born six children, Alice, at Storm Lake, Mrs. J. A. Wirtz, of New England, Mrs. Simon Minnihan, of Jefferson, Francis, Joseph and Mary still at home near Farlin Iowa. Joseph was reared a Catholic and devout in that faith until death. Besides his wife and children he leaves to mourn his loss four brothers, three sisters and three grandchildren.

The remains laid peacefully to rest in the Catholic Cemetery at this place.[John Daniel Buchmiller.FTW]

Excerpts from his obituary in the Jefferson Bee on July 19, 1922;

Funeral services occurred on Monday afternoon, with one of the largest gatherings of friends and neighbors ever witnessed in that place. More than a hundred were there from Jefferson. In the death of Mr. Cairns the community loses an honored and sterling citizen. He was the soul of honesty, and having the confidence and esteem of everyone who knew him.

He came to Greene County when quite young with his parents and lived here until fire destroyed the home and caused his father's death. His mother then returned to Mendora, Illinois, where two sisters, Nellie and Zona passed away. Returning to Greene county in the early eighties his mother was united in marriage with W. C. Stream to which union two daughters were born, Dolly (Mrs. Clifford West) and Nellie (Mrs. Walter Noll.)

He possessed a fine sense of humor that made him a most enjoyable companion. During the last days of his life he called his loved ones to his side and clearly stated his wishes for the future to them, giving them good advice and urging them to live in peace and harmony, and ever to live and act honestly with all mankind.
