The following is an index to the 446 baptism records of St. Thomas the Apostle [Catholic] Chapel which was located southwest of Millstadt, IL. Baptisms from St. Thomas are indexed from 1837 thru 1860. A few of the early baptisms are written in English but the majority are written in Latin. The Latin form of the given name has been retained in this index as found in the original records. Some of the handwriting in these records is VERY difficult to decipher and some of the priests wrote surnames phonetically. “See also” entries are sometimes used to guide the researcher to variable spellings. The names of the baptismal sponsors are found in the original records but have not been included in this index.

St. Thomas the Apostle Chapel was located about 2 miles southwest of Millstadt in Section 20 of Millstadt Township, somewhere near the intersection of Illinois Route 158 and Bohleysville Road. The log church was dedicated on 26 Nov. 1837 by Bishop Joseph Rosati of St. Louis who on that same day opened the parish register. The first baptism was Franz Armstudt who was baptized on 10 December 1837 by R. Loisel. St. Thomas was a mission church and did NOT have a resident priest but was served by priests from the surrounding area. The priests’ names who appear in the records are: Rev. John Kenny (1838 thru Feb. 1840); Rev. J. Kuenster (Oct. 1842 thru April 1845); Rev. G. H. Ostlangenberg (Dec. 1845 thru March 1847); W. Masterson (May 1847 thru March 1848); Michael Prendergast (Sept. 1848 thru March 1850); Hermann Liermann (Jan. 1851 thru Nov. 1856); Hubert C. Mueller (Feb. 1857 thru April 1857); Charles Raphael (July 1857 thru March 1858); and Arnold Pinkers (1859 thru 1860). Other Catholic priests occasionally performed baptisms here.

St. Thomas saw a decline in the 1850’s with the establishment of the St. James parish in Millstadt. St. James baptism records begin in 1857 and should also be checked for entries.
