Baltz Cemetery [aka Salem Cemetery] Located on Stemler Road in Section 12 of the south part of Sugar Loaf Township. Baltz Cemetery is also known as Salem Cemetery. Salem Evangelical Church was established adjacent to this cemetery and was dedicated June 16, 1844 by Pastor Johann Jacob Riess, Pastor Jacob Knauss, and Conrad Riess. The church was sold in December 1910 to George Culli who moved it to Millstadt where it was torn down in July 1964. The earliest known burial in the cemetery appears to be that of Elisabetha Maria Hoffmann who died at the age of 7 years on October 18, 1845. Tombstone inscriptions were copied in 1971 and revised in 1985 by Robert Buecher. The inscriptions were published in the St. Clair County, IL, Genealogical Society Quarterly, Volume 3, pages 181-185 and 1986 page 43. Centreville Cemetery [aka Old Millstadt Cemetery] Located in the southern part of Millstadt at the intersection of South Jefferson & Harrison Streets. It is also known as the Millstadt Cemetery or the Old Millstadt Cemetery. It was established on May 4, 1844 on land purchased from Henry Randlemann for $7.00. The first known burial was Wilhelm Siebert, son of Martin Siebert, who died October 22, 1844 at the age of 2 years. A southern section consisting of 1 3/8 acres was purchased in May 1861 from Henry Oldendorph for $235.00. Tombstone inscriptions were copied in 1985 and 1986 by Martha Mae & Elsa E. Schmidt and were published in Millstadt Township Cemeteries, St. Clair County, IL, pp. 52-64, published by the St. Clair County Genealogical Society in 2007. Concordia Cemetery. Located in Section 28 of Stookey Township at the intersection of Illinois State Route 163 and Concordia Road. The original plot of ground was deeded on 24 Nov. 1845 to the “Trustees of the School and Meetinghouse Concordia” by Simon & Martha Peter. The cemetery is owned by Concordia United Church of Christ which is adjacent to the cemetery. This cemetery was also sometimes known as the Flickinger Cemetery after Pastor Wilhelm Flickinger who served as pastor here from 1855-1866. The oldest part of the cemetery is in the southwest part where the graves are in chronological order. Many tombstones have disappeared from this section. The death records of Concordia Church, which begin in 1851, contain information about many burials for which there are no tombstones. The tombstone inscriptions were copied in 1985 by Elsa & Martha Mae Schmidt and were published in St. Clair County, IL, Genealogical Society Quarterly, 1989, pages 194-208. Freivogel Cemetery [aka Zion Cemetery] Located south of Millstadt in Section 21 of Millstadt Township at the intersection of Saxtown Road & Mueller Road. It is also known as Zion Cemetery. In 1837, Freivogel Cemetery was established near the original log church of Zion on land donated by Johann Nicholas Schmalenberger. The first known burial was that of Valentin Gruenewald who died on September 1, 1837 at the age of 31 years. The oldest existing tombstone (as of 2009) is for Johann Friedrich Baltz who died on October 30, 1840 at the age of 31 years. The tombstone inscriptions were copied in April 1972 and were published in Millstadt Township Cemeteries, St. Clair County, IL, pp. 83-88, published by the St. Clair County Genealogical Society in 2007. Mount Evergreen Cemetery Located in the northwest part of Millstadt on North Polk Street . The cemetery was dedicated on January 16, 1908 with the burial of William Schmahlenberger. The land for the cemetery was bought from William Hoeser and the cemetery name was suggested by John W. Wagner (1864-1949). The tombstone inscriptions were copied starting in 1986 by Don Slinkard, Jim Stoeber, and Bill Jacobus. They were published in Millstadt Township Cemeteries, St. Clair County, IL, pp. 1 - 51, published by the St. Clair County Genealogical Society in 2007. St. James Catholic Cemetery Located just north of Millstadt on Illinois Route 163. The cemetery was established by St. James parish in 1867 with a southern part added in 1894. The tombstone inscriptions were copied in 1986 by Elsa & Martha Mae Schmidt and were published in Millstadt Township Cemeteries, St. Clair County, IL, pp. 68-77, published by the St. Clair County Genealogical Society in 2007. Saxtown Cemetery. Located in Section 4 of the South Part of Millstadt Township on Bohleysville Road near the intersection with Fossil Creek Road. Many of those buried here were members of St. Paul United Church of Christ at Floraville. The earliest existing tombstone is for Philippine Probst who died in infancy in 1865. The tombstone inscriptions were copied in the Summer of 1972 by Edward, Esther & Robert Buecher and were published in Millstadt Township Cemeteries, St. Clair County, IL, pp. 91-92, published by the St. Clair County Genealogical Society in 2007. Union Hill Cemetery. Located in Section 11 of Millstadt Township, this cemetery is approximately 2 miles northeast of Millstadt on Illinois State Route 158. It is supposedly the oldest cemetery in Millstadt Township with its first burial being John Ross who died October 1, 1823. A church, known as the Union Meeting House, was established adjacent to the cemetery in 1819. The church was destroyed by fire on March 31, 1881. A new church was dedicated in September 1904. The oldest existing tombstone is that of Thomas Jarrard who died 16 October 1823 at the age of 51 years. Tombstone inscriptions were copied by the Belleville Chapter of the DAR in the early 1930’s and by Robert Buecher in 1972. The inscriptions were published in Millstadt Township Cemeteries, St. Clair County, IL, pp. 78 - 82, published by the St. Clair County Genealogical Society in 2007. White Cemetery. This cemetery is located on Mine Haul Road behind the Henry R. White Research Farm. The earliest burial for which there is a tombstone is for Stephen Lacey who died in March 1821 at the age of about 28 years. The tombstone inscriptions were copied by the Belleville Chapter of the DAR in the early 1930’s and in March 1987 by Earl & Edna Shondy and Martha Mae & Elsa Schmidt. The inscriptions were published in Millstadt Township Cemeteries, St. Clair County, IL, page 92, published by the St. Clair County Genealogical Society in 2007.
