Includes NotesNotes for Vincent Edward Bureau:
The death of Edward Bureau, 132 Fisher street, occured yesterday, after a long illness. Mr. Bureau was one of the earliest residents of Marquette and had he been spared until next year he would have then rounded out half a century of life in this city. He came to Marquette in 1854, and thus had seen the city grow to its present proportions from a mere cluster of huts. Mr. Bureau was a middle aged man when he settled here, his death occuring at the age of ninety-one years. The deceased is survived by a wife, five grown sons, Edward, Louis, Edmund, Emanuel and Frederick, and one daughter, Mrs. Margaret Bernard. The funeral will be held Thursday at 9 a.m. from the French Catholic church, with interment in the Holy Cross cemetery.

Family lore has it that Edward Bureau Sr. came to Marquette on June 21, 1854 on the steamer Manhattan with his wife Marguerite and her mother Catherine le Ridge de la Plant. Edward Bureau's wife was the daughter of Joseph Oliver le Ridge de la Plant who lived at St Edward, Canada. During the French Patriot War of 1837 rebelling against the Gov't he escaped to the U.S. notching trees, (walking only at night) as a guide to his oldest son Oliver who was to follow. The family finally settled at Au Sable Forks (La Franchette) Essex Co. N.Y.
