6. Patrick Leary was born about 1820 in County Cork, Ireland. He was a Common Laborer in 1870 in Clifton, NY. He resided Town of Clifton 1870 Census in Barnhart Island, St. Lawrence Co., NY. He died in New Bridge, St. Lawrence, NY. Patrick Leary fell in love with a girl of "higher station" and her parents forbid them from marrying because he was poor. They defied the girls' parents and finally found a priest who would marry them. They went to her parents with a "fait accompli", her parents disowned her and wouldn't even give her her dowry or even her clothes. A neighbor woman, in compassion, gave her literally the shawl off her back. Elizabeth would need it for the sea voyage; you see. They had worked hard and scaped together and borrowed from relatives and friends enough money for steerage fare to go to America in a sailing ship. Pat and Elizebeth arrived at America and soon ended up in Rossie, St. Lawrence Co., NY where they had a large family of Learys. Originally it was O'Leary but Bessie Leary a niece said, Pat "threw the O in the ocean coming over" and that the rest of the family resented that, for the O was given to the head of the clan by the Irish King as a sign of loyalty and favor. He was married to Elizabeth Farley about 1850 in County Cork, Ireland. Ran a boarding house in New Bridge, NY.
