Obituary

George Smith was born July 18, 1884 at Fremont, Mo., the son of Calvin and Nancy (Hopkins) Smith and departed this life on June 19, 1950 his age being 65 years, 11 months and 1 day. On May 17,1908 he was united in marriage to Martha Ellen Brooks and to this union 7 children were born: Letha, Laura, Leonard, Leland, Claude, Naomi and Clyde. Mr. Smith was a life long resident of Shannon and Oregon County. Those left to morn his passing are his wife and his children: Letha Yearwood, Laura Petty, Leonard, Naomi and Clyde all of Winona, MO., Leland in the US Army in Virginia, and Claude of St. Louis, MO., 2 brothers, William "Bill" of Alton and Harvey of Winona, MO. Interment in Mt. Zion cemetary in Winona, MO.

 

Mattie Ellen Brooks, daughter of Jacob and Sarah (Barnett) Brooks was born December 13, 1885 near Big Piney in Howell County, MO. and departed this life on August 11,1963 at her home in Winona, Mo., at the age of 77 years, 7 months, and 29 days. Most of her adult life was spent in Winona, Mo. She was united to George Smith on May 17,1908 of Wilderness Mo. and to this union 7 children were born. She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters, 1 brother, her husband,one granddaughter, and one great grandson. She is survived by all 7 of her children; Letha Yearwood, Laura Petty, Leonard, Leland, Clyde and Naomi Smith all of Winona, MO. and Claude of St. Louis, MO, and one brother Emery Brooks of Mt. View Mo. Interment at Mt. Zion Cemetary in Winona,MO.

 

Laura Francis (Smith) Petty-Bland was born January 7,1911 at Wilderness, Mo. the daughter of George and Martha Ellen (Brooks) Smith, and departed this life on June 21, 1989 at Maysville, MO. at the age of 78 years. She was united in marriage to Pearl Petty on December 24, 1929 and to this union 2 children were born. He passed away on May 17, 1962. On June 16,1973 she was united in marriage to Herbert Bland. He passed away on August 27,1977. She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, one great grand daughter Angela Campbell one sister Letha Yearwood, and 2 brothers; Claude and Leonard Smith. She is survived by her son Wilfred Petty of Maysville, MO., her daughter Anna Sexton of Frankfort, Ky, 2 brothers Clyde and Leland of Winona, MO., 1 sister Naomi of Winona, MO., 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Interment was in Pine Lawn Cemetary in Winona, MO.

 

Leonard Earl Smith was born MArch 14, 1013 at Wilderness Mo. and departed this life on Feb. 14,1980 at Van Buren MO. at the age of 66 years and 11 months. He was the son of George and Martha Ellen (Brooks) Smith. He was precded in death by his parents and one brother Claude Smith and one granddaughter Heather Smith. He leaves to morn his passing 2 daughters; Earlene Bay of Winona, MO., And Dora Ann Taylor of Mountain View Mo., and one son Dennis Smith of Winona, MO., a grand daughter Celestina Bay of Winona, Mo., 2 brothers; Leland and Clyde both of Winona, MO., 3 sisters; Letha Yearwood, Laura Bland and Naomi Smith all of Winona, MO. Interment was in the Mt. Zion Cemetary in Winona, Mo.

 

Leland Elliott Smith "Runt" was born Feb. 24,1916 in Shannon County, Mo., the son of George and Martha Ellen (Brooks) Smith and departed his life on December 8, 1990 in the V.A. Hospital in Poplar Bluff, MO. at the age of 74 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers; Claude "Blondie" and Leonard Smith, 2 sisters and 3 grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Lottie (Teague) Smith, 3 step children, 1 brother Clyde Smith of Winona, Mo., 1 sister Naomi Smith of Winona, MO, 11 gradnchildren, 2 great grandchildren and many neices and nephews. Leland served in the US Army. Interment in the Bethel Cemetary in Eminence, Mo.

Naomi Smith was born October 22, 1919 in Shannon County at Winona, MO., the daughter of George and Martha Ellen (Mattie) Brooks, Smith and departed this life on December 6, 1992 at her home in Winona, Mo. at the age of 73 years, 1 month and 14 days. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters; Laura Petty-Bland and Letha Yearwood; three brothers' Lenoard. Leland "runt" and Claude "Blondie"; two brothers in law; Pearl Petty and Frank Yearwood; two neices; two great neices; and one great nephew. She is survived by one brother Clyde Victor Smith of Winona, MO.; four sisters in laws; Ruby, Viola and Lottie Smith all of Winona, MO. and Jean Smith of St. Louis, Mo; 7 neices,6 nephews, 17 great neices and 17 great nephews. She lived all her life in and around Winona. Interment was in Mt. Zion Cemetary.

 

Claude Dwain Smith "Blondie" was born June 16,1923 at Winona Mo., the son of George and Martha Ellen "Mattie" (Brooks) Smith, and passed away on August 18,1977 at Depaul Hospital in St. Louis, Mo., at the age of 54 years,2 months and 2 days. He attended Vann School and on January 27,1947 was united in marriage to Wilma Jean West in Chicago. Illinois. To this union one son and three daughters were born. He leaves to morn his passing; his wife Wilma Jean, one son, Robert Dwain of the home and three daughters; Vivian Lee Shinault and Jackie Sue Kincaid both of St. Louis, MO. and Claudia Jean of the home, two sons inlaw three sisters, Letha Yearwood, Laura Bland, and Naomi Smith all of Winona MO., and three brothers; Leonard, Leland and Clyde of Winona. Claude "Blondie" was a veteran of the US Army and served during WWII recieving 4 bronze stars for his bravery above and beyond the call of duty. Interment was in the Mt, Zion Cemetary, Winona, MO.
