Brief overview

The family of Carruthers was known in the Southwest Border of Scotland for hundreds of years & derives its name from the word "caer" meaning "fort’’, and the personal name Ruther (originally Rhythr or Rydderch).

The family can be traced back to before the 13 century & were among those who rose with William Wallace around 1275 later fighting side by side with The Bruce at the battle of Bannockburn in 1314. The family took an active part in the border hostilities & are so considered a sept of the Bruce clan & elidgeable to use the Bruce Tartan & badge.

My brick wall start here with an Agricultural labourer working in Guillyburn - Kirkmahoe:
James CARRUTHERS (generation No.1)
born about 1791 presumably in Applegarth Dumfriesshire
Married in 1820 to: Sarah Mc Donald 1794/5 – 1864 Lochrutton – Dalswinton.
In 1851 she lived with sons John & Robert at the village of Quarellwood, kirkmahoe.

The Mc Donalds were shoe makers & passed the trade on to James’s children who were born in various places .
Lochmaben, Closeburn, Kirkmahoe & Kirkmichael.
Some of the children found them selves on the way to South Africa Aboard the Immigrant ship Cold Stream in 1861.
A fresh start in Africa - Settled in Somerset East Cape Province.
Opened the Eastern Boot Manufacturing works in Grahamstown fighting in the Basutu & Boer wars. Later Pioneered to Rhodesia in the 1890’s - The family continued fighting in the Matabele rebellions & Rhodesian bush war. The direct descendants of this line remain in the now Zimbabwe & are of good farming/Pioneer stock upholding the values of there forefathers……..
