  Notes for Nancy Elizabeth Asa:

Obit: Mary Elizabeth Brewer 79 widow of Stephen A. Brewer, died at her home at Fairport IA at 3:30 this
morning (3 Feb 1928) after an illness of several months. She was born in Drury township, IL the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Asa. Practically her entire life was spent in the vicinity of her birth, in Rock Island Co., IL and Muscatine Counties IA. She was married to Stephen A. Brewer in Drury township in 1871. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. O. A. Bird Put-in-Bay OH and Mrs. A. Creamer Fairport IA, two sons F. M. Brewer Geneva Island Geneva Island sat in the Middle of the Mississippi River until they put in the dam) and Glen Brewer Fairport IA, one sister Mrs. Susan Hayes, Muscatine
and 24 g/children. Funeral services will be conducted from the Fairport church at 2 o'clock Wed.
afternoon by the Rev. E. A. Lack, pastor of the Ziegler Memorial Lutheran church of New Era, IA. Funeral arrangements are in charge of the Goff undertaking parlors. Notes from June Welsch her name was not Mary it was Nancy. I found her last name spelt several ways Accy, Aca, Asay. I never knew Nancy but my mother told me how Nancy would patch all the boys jeans even tho she was blind she could thread a needle. My father told me Nancy loved to sit in her rocker and smoke her corn cob pipe and she also chewed tobacco. I was told she was part Indian according to her picture she sure looks like she is. From Muscatine Journal March 7, 1909, With her sister lying cold in death in South Muscatine IA, Mrs. Nancy E. Brewer, Feeble, blind and trembling with emotion, was led to the witness stand in the Jones trial to testify against the man she firmly believes killed her nephew and niece Mr. and Mrs. William Van Winkle. Suffering with the terrible affliction of almost total blindness with approaching deafness and other infirmitiesof age, she nerved herself to a supreme effort to aid the state in calling to justice the man it alleges is guilty of the fiendish murder. Mrs. Brewer told of Jones' visit to her home the night of the murder, and after the remark by Mrs. Eliza Van Winkle, that she was going to remain at Brewer's all night, and his decision to then go to Billy Van Winkle's and arrange to remain there that night. She also related the fact that drinks were passed around by the defendent and in fact told the same story her son Glen Brewer told. It took about two years to catch Jones and then he hung himself while waiting trial.

  Notes for Stephen Brewer:

In the probate papers of his father it had his name as Colonal Stephen Hail Brewer and in his son's Free Brewer bible it had his name as Stephen A. D. Brewer. He was in 1870 in Buffalo Praire, Rock Island Co. IL, census; Stephen 31 farmer born VA, Lee 8 born IL, Elizabeth 3 born IL. In 1880 Rock Island IL, (Drury Twn) Census; Stephen 41 born VA, Nancy E. wife 26 born IL, Lee 18 born IL, Elizabeth 13 born IA, Frank 8 born IL, Free 7 born IL, Glen 1 born IL. In 1900 Rock Island Co., IL, census Drury Township; Stephen 56 farmer born VA, and married 27 years he could read and write, Nancy 54 born IL, Glen 21 born IL, Agnes 9 born IL, Nuffie 6 born IL. I found both of his m/cer to his wifes. His first wife must of left him with the children as I found them living with Stephen in every census. My personal thought on Stephen and his first wife Sarah I think he kept two children and she kept two. He was in the Civil War, 12 6TH I.V.I. CO.I. IL, Volunteers, from 11 Aug.1862 to 12 July 1865. His pension papers said he enlisted in IL, and mustered out in Pine Bluff AR. When he was admitted to the Soldiers Home in Quincy IL, he made a short will dated 5 June 1902 and said he was Stephen Brewer from Drury Township Rock Island Co. IL, (Drury Township is right across the Mississippi River from Muscatine IA) formerly a Soldier of the U.S.A. in the war against late rebellion respectfully ask that he be admitted as a member of the Soldier's Home. That he is now 63 year s old; That he is 5 feet and 7 inches high; That he is of Light Complection, Blue Eyes and Gray Brown Hair; That he was born in Grayson County VA, on the 12 Day of Feb 1839. That he has a Blind Wife; that he has 7 children now living ages 10, 13, 19, 26, 30, 35, and 40. In the short will he left 10 Acres to his wife Nancy E. Brewer and his son Glen Brewer. In another paper he had to fill out he named his children Lee Brewer 40 residence Buda IL, Lizzie (Elizabeth) 35 residence Buda IL, Frank Brewer 30 residence Fairport Muscatine Co., IA, Free Brewer 26 residence Drury Township IL, Glenn Brewer 22 residence Drury Township IL, Agnes Brewer 13 residence Drury Township IL, Minnie Brewer Bird 19 residence Andulisa Rock Island County IL, Nuffie Brewer 10 residence Drury Township IL. On his d/cer it said he was 53 which is wrong he was 63. He is buried at the Soldiers Home Cem. in Quincy IL. Notice that none of his children had a middle name. It was always a family story that they gave Nuffie her name because they had enough children. The following Memoriam was sent to Elizabeth Brewer Teagarden; Resolutions passed by Shelby Norman Post G.A.R.,at last regular meeting upon the death of Comrade Stephen Brewer. Whereas; Comrade Stephen Brewer, late of Co. "I" 126th IL Inft. That we sincerely sympathize with and extend our condolence to his bereaved family. That the adjutant is here-in requested to mail to the family of our deceased comrade a copy of these resolutions. Signed Committee.
