James Noland moved to Louden County, Va, where he enlisted in the Virginia Regiment in the Fall of 1775. He served for 12 months as a private in Captain Somon Triplett Company of Colonel William Grayson's Virginia Regiment. Colonel Grayson was a cousin.

Shortly after the expiration of his service, he moved to Rowan County, NC and from sometime in 1780 until the close of the war, he served as Captain under Colonel Frank Locke in North Carolina Troops. He was in many skirmishes with the Tories and the British, and the Tories of North Carolina offered $500 for his head. He road an express for General Smallwood from Salisbury to Deep River. He was allowed a pension on his application of November 19, 1832. He died there December 26, 1833. He married Barbara Saunders December 26, 1774.[Art Clay Family Trees.FTW]
