Fremont and Cochrane were the candidates of a faction of radical Democrats consisting mostly of Germans and abolitionists. The nominees' bust portraits appear in the center in roundels framed in oak leaves, supported by two cornucopias and surmounted by an eagle holding a shield, streamer, and arrows. Culross is the home of the 9th and 10th Earls. I visited there in 1998. The Abbey house was a private residence and I snapped a photo of it through a break in the hedge that separates it from the Abbey grounds. The Dundonald Arms is a historically important town bar that is named after the family. I had lunch there, outside in a sunny alley, with a couple of pints (note the finger obscuring the upper right corner of the photo). Photos by Guy R. Cochrane

I also visited he ruins of Dundonald Castle. Built by The Stewart King Robert II and lived in by his son Robert III. The estate came into the Cochrane family in 1638. Photo by Guy R. Cochrane

Nearby the ruins of Auchens House. Located a mile from Dundonald Castle, it was the home of the Cochrane's in the late 1600's. At that time it stood in a huge deer park, and was a strongly built structure with turrets and crow-stepped gables. It was often referred to as Auchens Castle. Photo by Guy R. Cochrane.
