Jacob Cochran Family

My Daddy's grandfather was Jacob Benjamin Cochran born 1822 Guernsey Ohio.

His parents were Martha Henderson and William Cochran of Pennsylvania. Land records show William bought land in Guernsey Ohio in 1821. With the many Cochrans migrating into Ohio, I found that William and Alexander were the only two in Guernsey during that time. They had come from Pennsylvania born to an Alexander Cochran of Scotland, is what the family tale has been.

Martha Henderson's mother was Nancy Ann Clendenning of Pennsylvania and her mother was Sarah Sturgeon born in Pennsylvania about 1753.

Sarah's mother was Margaret Corbett, who had wed Thomas Sturgeon in 1750 - his father had come from Ireland to PA and married Sarah Ferguson about 1729

!Last name also spelled Clendennin !Nancy Ann Clendennin: Guernsey County History: One cold winter's day the indians, being hungry, came to the little home in Oxford Township. Not knowing what she should do, she gave them an apron full of fresh baked bread. In a few days a deer was left on the Porch. She was educated in Harrisburg, Dauphin Co., Pennsylvania, I assume she was probably born there. She came to Guernsey Co., Ohio in 1806 with her husband and Children. She was the first Teacher in Guernsey Co., Ohio.

Nancy Ann Clendenning was married to William Henderson about 1797 and he served in the War of 1812.

WilliAM HENDERSON: Guernsey County History: He was the oldest child of John and Martha (Long) Henderson. His Grandparents were William and Agnes Henderson who came from County Down, Ireland in 1758, they settled in Lewistown, Mifflin Co., Pennsylvania. William was a major in the War of 1812. He was a blacksmith and made his own sword. "Roster of Ohio Soldiers in War of 1812" Page 243, Vol. Colonel John DeLong first Regiment Ohio Militia Maj. Wm. Henderso

William was the son of Martha Long of PA and John Henderson of Ireland.. Martha Long's parents were "Ann" and Thomas Long of Carlisle PA and this is where I must point out there was a Carlisle Indian School there and this was basically still indian country.

Jacob's first wife was Mariah White and her father may have been Joseph White. Jacob and Mariah had six daughters and no sons but on the 1880 census he listed a grandson named Frank in Iowa. Mariah called one of her daughters Josie, which was short for Josephine.....

Jacobs second wife was Clora Jane Miller and they had several children including my grandfather Frank Delbert Cochran so that is the line that I choose to trace at this point in time. My father grew up with Millers and Cochrans and I have some pictures of each.

Researching Jacob Benjamin Cochran from Ohio and his wives www.hometown.aol.com/kc90853/Jacob.html

* Jacob Benjamin Cochran born about 1822 in Oxford Township, Guernsey County Ohio, married twice, followed his brothers to California during the Gold Rush and shows up on that 1860 census with brother John Henderson Cochran, served in the Civil War in the Ohio Infantry and then moved his first family with Mariah White to Iowa and became farmers.

/B>
* Mariah's father seems to have been Joseph White of Maryland who was on the 1850 census of Oxford with his son Robert White, and living next to Robert Henderson, which is nearly the same location where we found Mariah on the 1860 census with her daughters including one named Josina.

Jacob Cochran's mother was Martha Henderson. His father William Cochran of Pennsylvania married Miss Henderson on 2/20/1818 in Guernsey and they are found on the Ohio 1820 census living near the Hendersons. She was a daughter of Nancy Ann Clendennin and William Henderson.

William's parents were John Henderson and Martha Long

Nancy's parents were Sarah Sturgeon and John Clendenning.

All of these families had migrated to Ohio; then several moved into Iowa Territory. Many families and many tribes were leaving the east coast and moving west, seeking their freedom.

When his first wife passed away Jacob married a widowed Clora Jane Miller of Illinois. The 1880 census shows he has a grandson named Frank, but his first wife only had daughters so this is quite a mystery. Several years later, Clora Jane gave him a son named Frank Delbert Cochran and this Frank married Luella Coonfield in Benton County Arkansas

Frank Delbert Cochran served in WWI

McClain -

Alice Carter's ancestors of Virginia moved into Spartanburg SC before 1800
http://www.usgenealogy.net/members///Kathy///FILES/Files1/1800charlesmcclain-spartanburgsc  there is Charles with wife Elizabeth MOON and 3 sons and 3 daughters which would include our Josiah born 1788 before he moved into Georgia and had James.

James McClain married "Anna" and had Josiah Marion McClain who had Charles Allen.
Josiah Marion was in the Civil War and his wife Elizabeth Broadway filed for pension.

Charles Allen McClain and Lorena raised the children of Cecil and Alice McClain Carter.

Annie Lee Carter changed her name to Anne Alice, after her mother Alice McClain Carter. She also named a son Victor.  Annie Lee Carter had no knowledge of her daddy's mother nor the fact she was named after her.  Annie had no knowledge of her Fenn family heritage, only that they were somehow "kin" to her daddy - only when I ordered her daddys death certificate did we learn more.

"The Williamsburg Journal", Wiliamsburg, Iowa co., Iowa, dated Thursday, March 30, 1904, in the Green Valley news:

Mr. Jas. Miller one of Green Valley's oldest settlers died last Sunday morning and was laid to rest in Champion Hill Cemetery on Monday. Despite the gloomy weather it was one of the largest funerals ever held at Champion Hill; many came from a distance to pay their last respects to one known only for his goodness and uprightness. He leaves a wife and ten children to mourn his loss.

The Town of Remsen
until recent years this town occupied a large area in the extreme northeast
corner of Oneida county, much of which was covered by the original forest.
Remsen was reduced to its present area of 23,364 acres by the erection from
it of the town of Forestport in 1869. Most of the territory of the present
town was included in the Remsenburgh patent; a small section in the south
part in the Servis patent, and another small section in the west part in the
Steuben patent, and another small section in the west part in the Steuben
tract, as shown on accompanying map. Remsen was erected simultaneously with
the formation of Oneida county (March 15, 1798), when it was set off from
Norway, Herkimer county, and named after Henry Remsen, one of the original
patentees. Black River forms the northern boundary of the town, and Canada
Creek the southeastern boundary; it is further watered by Cincinnati Creek,
Baker Brook and small tributaries. The surface of the town is well elevated
and generally hilly and broken, while the soil is a light sandy loam. A very
large portion of the inhabitants of this town are of Welsh descent.
Settlement began in Remsen previous to the formation of the town, with the
arrival of Schubael Cross from Massachusetts, who in March, 1794, came on
westward, left the Mohawk at Utica, and with his family turned northward
into the forest. He made a line of marked trees along the Cincinnati Creek
through the site of Remsen village, and halted and built a log cabin at what
became known later as Burritt's Mills, and afterwards as Bordwell Settlement
now Porpoise Glen. Mr. Cross was an energetic pioneer and he soon had a
piece of land cleared, and built later a wind power grist mill. This was
followed by the erection of a saw mill, both of which were of great utility
to the settlers in that section. Mr. Cross took a cold from getting wet in
the creek, lost his mental balance, and finally died, his death being,
probably, the first in the town.
507
In 1795 three more families came into town; these were John Bonner, Barnabas
Mitchell and Amos Bull. Mr. Bonner was an Englishman, but came in from
Vermont and settled on the lot afterwards owned by Jenkin Jones; later he
moved west. Mr. Mitchell settled on land afterwards owned by his son Milo
Mitchell, and his daughter Polly, who became Mrs. Van Slyke, was the first
white child born in the town. Amos Bull settled on the tract which was long
known as Bull's Commons, and later as the Camp farm; discouraged with the
land and his prospects he removed to Floyd, where he died.
These pioneers were soon followed into the town by Ephraim Hollister, father
in law of Judge Storrs, who followed brick making, and who was elected the
first supervisor of the town.
Stephen Hutchinson and a Mr. King located in the town about this time, and a
daughter of the latter and her husband were probably the first persons
married in the town, about the year 1800. Mr. King kept the first public
house. It is recorded that the first religious service of a public character
was held in Mr. Hutchinson's barn on what became known as the Price farm; he
was the first overseer of the poor of the town.
The site of Remsen village was settled early by Peter Becker, who built a
small log cabin on his hundred acre lot, afterwards selling the property to
deacon Platt, of Steuben. The log cabin was soon afterward burned.
About the same time Joseph Brownell purchased the 100 acre lot on which the
upper tavern was built. He was one of the first three road commissioners of
the town. He soon sold out to Oliver Smith and left the town; Gershom
Hinkley, a practical surveyor, was elected road commissioner in his place.
It was on the farm of the latter at Fairfield Corners that the first school
house in the town was built.
James Smith and his son Joab came into the town about 1795, and the father
opened a tavern in 1797 on the place afterwards occupied by Captain Root;
the son died at Sackett's Harbor in the war of 1812. At about this time the
families of Jacob Dayton, Nathaniel Rockwood, Solomon Gillett, Perez Farr,
Ebenezer Dodd, William Platt, Philip Scott (the first physician in town and
an early town clerk) and Rev. Edmund Tefft, the first resident minister,
settled in the town. The names of other early comers appears further on.

This town and those adjoining it in the eastern part of the county are very
largely settled by Welsh. The first of this nationality to locate here was
David Jones, but it is not known in just what year he came. Steuben and
Trenton, adjoining, already contained a large number of these thrifty
citizens. Mr. Jones took up the so called Billings lot, on the Steuben road.
In the year 1803 Broughton White and his brother in law, Lemuel Hough, came
in from the town of Steuben, and Mr. White subsequently opened a small
grocery in a log building on the site of the later store in Remsen village;
it was the first mercantile establishment in the town, and Esquire White's
chief returns for his goods were ashes. He sold out, after making further
improvements, to John Mappa and Jacob Belticher, who in turn transferred it
to Herman Ferry.
The eastern part of the town remained substantially a wilderness until a
number of years after settlement had progressed in the western part. It bore
the local designation of "Ninety six", and the first settlers came in about
1816. About the year 1808 the Welsh families of David Manual, John James,
Griffith I. Jones, John Owens and Hugh Hughes, all from Wales, settled in
the town, and were succeeded by many others who with their descendants
contributed largely to the prosperity of the community. It is recorded that
Griffith O. Griffiths, of Remsen village, now deceased, was the first Welsh
child born in this State west of the Hudson River.
It is unfortunate that the earliest record of this town are lost, but it is known that the first town meeting was held in the year of the town organization, 1798, in the log dwelling of Samuel Howe, at Cross Settlement; Mr. Howe was the first justice of the peace of the town. The list of supervisors of the town, however, is complete, through the record in the Jones Annals; they are:

1857. Lieut. Hananiah Parker. Born ca 1638 at Lynn or Reading, MA. Hananiah died at Reading, MA on 10 Mar 1723/4.15

"Hananiah Parker settled on land which bordered his fathers farm. (This it seems was situated about a half-mile east of Dea. Thomas Parker's, on the main road from Lynn to Lowell, now Lowell Street in Wakefield, and upon which place Hananiah's descendants, through his son Ebenezer, occupoied and lived for five generations in the Parker name. ...) The assessors' list of 1667 credits him with a house and farm. He was made a freeman Oct. 15, 1679. He belonged to Reading's military company, of which he was chosed ensign in 1680, and lieutenant in 1684. It is evident that his Puritan townsmen had confidence in his ability and character at an early date, for in 1679 he with tow others were given charge of building a new Meeting-house. He was then chosen by the General Court one of the Committee to 'rectifie and settle the highway between Woburn and Reading.' Consider the energy and industry of our ancestor when we say that in addition to the great work of changing the primeval forest to a fertile farm he performed the duties of selectman, town clerk and representative, each for a long period. The military affairs required much of his time, if not active service at certain periods. Traingings were frequent and an absence cost a heavy fine. Every Sunday found him at church, to which he and wife connected themselves very soon after marriage. The Church records mention his name with respect. As a representative of Reading to the General Court at Boston he served seven years. He was a typical Puritan yeoman, the father of a rugged, honorable family of children. He gave thought to the education of the young. In 1707 Lt. Hananiah Parker and Capt. John Browne were appointed committee 'to provide a Scool Master for the towne school.' They reported that John Webb of Braintree 'be chosen to teach reading, writing, casting accounts and the Latin and Greek tongues' for the three months next ensuing."88

Hananiah made a deposition in 1672 stating he was 34 years old (Records and Files of the Quarterly Courts of Essex County, 4:85). He was made a freeman in 1679, and served as selectman, town clerk, and representative of Reading. On 12 Nov 1706 Lieut. Hananiah Parker of Reading deeded to John Eaton of Reading part of the tlot that was Nicholas Browne's (ibid., 27:535). On 13 Jun 1712 John Parker Sr of Reading, joiner (with consent of his wife Deliverance and honored father Lieut. Hanahiah Parker) deeded his homestead to Jonathan Poole of Reading (ibid., 25:161).89

Hananiah's will, dated 20 May 1703, probated 30 Mar 1724, names wife Mary, sons Jon, Samuel, & Ebenezer, daughter Mary Pool, grandchildren, and brother Nathaniel, and gives to son John 3 acres of meadow which was his grandfather Brown's gift to his mother.89

Researching many names in my family tree and posting them on Rootsweb Family Trees to share as well as posting on genealogy.com and on usgenealogy.com and providing a major focus on Alabama Genealogy and my father's lineage in Kansas.
Researching one's family tree is a long process and and only the ones close to your heart and in your life can be verified in the beginning.

Browsing through the many other family trees on the internet we can find thousands of new cousins, and thankfully there are many census records, cemetery records, etc. available to verify those.

Some may not be verified and need further research. I have ordered a few death certificates, browsed through boxes of our old family photos with names and dates on them, cards, letters, and notebooks, to put this together, yet am quite certain there are still many corrections and additions to come.

Dozens of new cousins have emailed me with some detail about their connection to my lineage and it's been wonderful getting to know you all. Some want me to show them their indian blood which is impossible, I only know my own. I know that my dad was one quarter Cherokee and his sister calls her son Regal Eagle and my mom's great great grandpa Stephens married a full blood Cherokee in SC before his journey to the Dublin / Ramer area where I have visited a few times to do my research. Her great great grandmother Nancy Anderson has two grandmothers from Cherokee blood and maybe more.

Both of my parents had Cherokee blood but it is highly possible there was some other native american blood in their lineage. Many of my mother's ancestors lived among the Creeks in the 1700s and my father's lineage was in Kentucky 1800 where many tribes had migrated, yet soon after, they all began to migrate to Iowa Territory and Indiana, ending up in Arkansas and Oklahoma.

it's been said that my dad's great grandfather John Wright Little refused an indian land allotment however he did uproot his family from their Kentucky roots to migrate to a homestead in Arkansas and his descendants ended up in Alabama.

When I was looking into my husband's line I was told that his mom's grandmother Partridge was an indian from Georgia and I did find her families on census there before they all moved into Elmore County

Of course Annie Lee Stone might have married a half blood Wm Fenn in 1893 as we see the Cherokee blood runs strong in his mother's line of Harrell.

Fenn family plot owned by Orr is quite a mystery that surely some of the relatives can resolve. Perhaps Bob Fenn knows since he had Uncle Emmett buried there

When I began working the Sellers lineage of my mother, I found where one of the cousins, Nathaniel Sellers married a Schrimpshire girl and her sister married an Indian Chief Dennis Bushyhead. I have several of those branches !!! In the Sellers case, the Sellers and Andersons already had Indian blood in their line from their grandmothers of North Carolina 1700s. The Scrimpshire father, Martin, had married a Gunter who was full blood Cherokee and they all resided in Guntersville Alabama. One of the Gunters married a McCoy girl but then I found one of my Fenn grandfathers did also!! Mrs Fenn then named a son Travis and he married a girl only known as ?Mary?. which might be another clue.

Then I looked for the parents of Martin Schrimpshire and found his mother was listed online as ?Edith Kona Edna Vann? - lo and behold another famous Cherokee name, which is where I need to study their hometown known as Big Joe Vann?s Spring Place in Georgia.

My own grandfather Cecil Fenn Carter said they were Cherokee and I managed to locate his sister Carrie in Choctaw Nation Oklahoma.  Carrie's husband Ben Johnson was born in Indian Nation, Texas but his mother was an indian from Alabama and his father "denied" her the right to join the Rolls.

Carrie and Cecil had a brother, Frank Jr., who called them "half" siblings so maybe Mr. Carter was the father of them - we will never know !  There are many Carter families online researching their Cherokee blood.  What we do know is that William Fenn born 1855 in Tuskegee Alabama married Anna Lou Stone in 1893 and she left him about 1900 to remarry, but she joined her family in Macon Georgia.  Anna's Uncle Charles Stone named his sons Tecumseh and Osceola. Also when I studied my daughter's Westbrook family, I found their great great grandfather named a son with his second wife, Osceola.

Following the path of the old ones.

We lived along Mingo Road in Broken Arrow, Tulsa County, Oklahoma and my dad's parents at one time lived in Chelsea, Rogers County, Oklahoma before settling in Labette, KS.

Many of his family migrated into Arizona near many indian reservations which still exist and we soon joined them living by his Aunt Eunice. Mom's brothers visited often and one owned a roofing company in Enid, OK while the other lived in North Carolina, where his wife's grandfather was a pastor in the Cherokee Reservation.

We lived amongst people of all colors and heard many different languages and took note of various traditions.
