Ancestors of William Edgar McNett

Generation No. 3

      4. Ezra McNitt, born 1802 in Buckland, Franklin, Mass.; died 1839 in Genoa Twp., Delaware County, Ohio. He was the son of 8. Adam ( McKnight) McNitt and 9. Margaret Clark. He married 5. Hulda Ellis.

      5. Hulda Ellis, born 13 Sep 1804 in Stockton, Chautaugua County, New York; died Abt. 1838 in Stockton, Chautauqua, New York. She was the daughter of 10. Edward M. Ellis and 11. Patty (Fay) Unknown.

Notes for Ezra McNitt:
Jemima, wife of David McNitt was probably a sister of Hulda Ellis who married Ezra McNett. Martha Ellis married Alexander Merchant, in whose home we find Edgar McNitt in 1850. Daniel Ellis, son of Edward Ellis born in New York married Lucinda Searles, daughter of Mercy and Peter. (I believe they are all siblings)

Adam mentions Ezra in an 1820 pension application, saying that if it weren't for his hard work on the farm, they would all have been in bad shape. Ezra is not mentioned in Adam's estate in 1850, having died in 1839; however, Edgar is listed as only "heir at law" to a portion equal to that of Adam's sons and daughters. His portion assigned to "Diaditus Keeler, guardian of Edgar McNitt"

Ezra owned land in Genoa Township, Delaware County and that same land was left to Edgar in settlement of his estate in 1841. The land was sold by Diadatus Keeler, guardian of Edgar to pay for Edgar's support by Keeler. At some point Edgar returned to Chautauqua County New York, where we find him in the home of Alexander Merchant.

Died in Genoa Twp. Delaware County on the 17th inst Col. Diadatus Keeler, aged 59 years. Resident of this county 37 years, member of Presbyterian Church. Bereaved widow and surviving children.

Notes for Hulda Ellis:
Jemima, wife of David McNitt was probably a sister of Hulda Ellis who married Ezra McNett. Daniel Ellis, son of Edward Ellis born in New York married Lucinda Searles, daughter of Mercy and Peter. Also Martha Ellis married Alexander Merchant, in whose home we found Edgar in the census of 1850. (I believe they are all siblings).

Child of Ezra McNitt and Hulda Ellis is:
2 i.   Edgar McNett, born 01 Jun 1833 in Chautauqua County, New York; died 02 Mar 1920 in Orange Twp., Delaware County, Ohio; married Rosella Searles 07 Apr 1860 in Delaware County, Ohio.

      6. Ira Washington Searles, born 21 Aug 1818 in Delaware County, Ohio; died 11 Apr 1841 in Delaware County, Ohio. He married 7. Phoebe Sebring 06 Jul 1839 in Delaware, Ohio19.

      7. Phoebe Sebring, born 06 Apr 1817 in Genoa Twp. Delaware County Ohio; died 17 Jul 1894 in Harlem Twp. Delaware, Ohio. She was the daughter of 14. Obadiah Sebring and 15. Esther Bailey Sutton.

Notes for Ira Washington Searles:
Although I've not found documented evidence, I believe Ira's father is probably Ira Searles, son of Peter and Mercy born in 1794, New York. Sebring Collections says he may be the son of Moses Searles; however, the names of Peter & Mercy's other sons and daughters as well as McNett connections make the connection to Ira more likely.
