Zebulon moved to New York state around 1800 and settled at Lord's Corners near Onondaga County. He was for many years, a tavern keeper and farmer in Syracuse. He served in Captain John Carpenter's Company, Springfield, Mass. May 28 - August 28, 1781. Zebulon had a reputation for being rough and fast. This story will illustrate his behavior... "Zeb", as he was called, was sick and the family physician left a nurse to look after him. When he returned, he found the nurse gone and the following note left... " Dr. Furness, I leave your patient thus: Peevish, squeamish, cross as h==l, a d==d old rascal, sick or well. Record of the Rust Family by Albert D. Rust, published in 1891 (pages 198-199)

About the year 1815 he moved into the hotel and kept it for some years, his sons George and Philo N. being with him part of the time. George Rust succeeded his father as proprietor of the house, while Philo removed a little later to Syracuse where he became a prominent landlord. John went from Pittsfield, Mass., to South Hero Vermont with his father, Elijah, and was there a number of years, returning to Pittsfield in 1812. In 1816 a Mrs. John Janes united with the Congregational church in Pittsfield. Not long after this, they all went to Ohio, most settling in Delaware County.
John was an eccentric genius; but more, he was a regular, rough, untamed backwoodsman, self-willed, dogmatic, looking upon refinement, courtesy and good breeding as irrelevant to practical life. But he is credited with various labors to do good to assist in religious services and to preach some peculiar views as he had opportunity. John-like he drove around the country, having no idle days. He worked till the last day of his natural life, and died quite suddenly. He married (1) Hannah Rockwell, 1791, who died September 2, 1832. He married (2) Fanny Cothran, 1833. She died 1842. He married (3) Miss Eunice Rose.

ARTICLE IN "THE RELIGIOUS TELESCOPE" , December 15,1858...........

Rev. John Janes died at his residence, in Berlin Township, Delaware County, Ohio, November 21st 1858 in the 88th year of his age. Father Janes was a native of one of the Eastern States, came to Ohio and settled on the farm, where he lived and died, forty years ago. He embraced religion when in his sixteenth year, and ever after through life's long journey, endeavered to live the life of the righteous; and for a number of years has been a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The writer became acquainted with hi, the latter part of last winter, when he engages in holding a protracted meeting in the neighborhood, in which he took a very active part. Though the infirmaties of old age were upon him, he was a regular attendant night and day at the meeting, adding much to the interest of the same by his frequent reference to his experience, and intercessios at the throne of grace, and his warm and powerful exhortations to the unconverted to immediately embrace the Savior, After the above meeting and up to the time of his death, he was very regular in his attendance upon the means of grace, and living in the full enjoyment of the love of God in his heart: ansd often have we heard him express his desire to depart and be with Christ, and to join with those who had gone before, among whom was quite a goodly nimber of his own family and relatives. Two of his sons who had preceded him to the land of glory, were ministers in the Methodist E. Church;-- Rev. John Janes, Jr. was for a number of years, a traveling minister in Northern Ohio. Father Janes assisted us by giving of his means to the erection of a very neat church in his neighborhood during the last summer, in which his funeral sermon was preached by the writer, to a large and weeping congregation of friends and neighbors. His death was somewhat unexpected, but it found him ready. May his friends who are left behind, each one of them, follow in his footsteps, until all shall meet in the land of the blessed, where sickness, sorrow, pain, and death, and the separation of friends are never known.
                                    T.T. Rose

According to records found in Peachblow Church, T.T. Rose was the minister of that church in 1857-58. Nephew Marshall Janes and his son Oren Janes and other family members were active in Peachblow U.B. Church

REAL ESTATE TRANSACTIONS

Baskins 1880 History of Delaware County, page 192........... In 1805, a settlement was made in what is now Berlin Township. The first purchase of land in this division of the county was made by Joseph Constant, and consisted of 4,000 acres. He was a Colonel in the war with the Seminole Indians, of Florida, and was taken sick at the South, and returned to his home in New York, where he soon after died.
Baskins 1880 History, page 452... The first purchaser of land in Berlin was Joseph Constant, of Peekskill, N. Y. He bought Section from the Government, paying two dollars per acre, and receiving a deed signed by John Adams. He was known as Judge Constant. Whether he received his title from a popular feeling that he was good as a judge or because he had enjoyed that honor, is not clearly known. He is said to have been a colonel in the army, and engaged in the war with the Seminoles in Florida, where he contracted an illness which terminated in his death.

Rev. John Janes was born at Grand Isle, South Hero, Vt., January 4, 1802, died at Norwalk, Ohio, 8 February 1848.
At the age of seventeen he emigrated to Ohio, and at twenty entered the itinerant connection of the Methodist Episcopal church. His ministry was within the states of Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan; and, as a pioneer preacher, traversed many a swamp and wilderness. He was a man of great energy and force: of genial temperment, and noted among his peers for brilliant conversational powers, endowed with wit and aptness in repartee. Bishop Thompson thus speaks of him in a published biographical sketch:
"His abilities in the pulpit were by no means of an inferior order. In his early days he was fond of polemical divinity; and, as he possessed sprightly wit, a warm fancy, an active intellect, and a dauntless heart, he was no mean antagonist. Unsparing to the strong, he was merciful to the prostrate, and courteous toward both. In his prime he was truly eloquent, though generally argumentative. He did not seek, like the giants of fable, by piling mountain upon mountain, to make a path from earth to heaven; rather like Apollos, he was wont, relying upon the aid of the divine spirit, to bring down heaven to earth by the melting strains of his subduing eloquence.
The companion whom he married 21 May 1828, was Hannah Brown, born in Plymouth, Vt. 16 January 1808. Her family emigrated to Michigan in 1827, and herself and sister, young ladies of seventeen and nineteen, formed the first Methodist Society at Ann Arbor. Her present residence is Berea, Ohio."

  Notes for Hannah Blanchard Brown:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohcuyaho/cities/middleburgh.html

Among those whom Berea “delights to honor” must be classed Mrs. Hannah (BROWN) JANES who, with her father’s family, removed from Plymouth, Vt., to Ann Arbor, Mich., in 1827. Her parents were Daniel and Polly (JEMMISON) BROWN, the latter a daughter of a Revolutionary soldier. Hannah BROWN and her sister, Rebecca, formed the first Methodist Episcopal church in Ann Arbor, with a class of seven. “Now we must have a preacher,” said Miss Hannah, and to this effect wrote the presiding elder at Detroit. In response to this call Rev John JANES was sent to Ann Arbor. The young preacher did not care to look elsewhere for a wife. The following year they were married and appointed to Sandusky circuit, where Rev. JAMES received for his first year’s salary $80, while his gifted young wife taught school for $1 per week. She decided to invest her first earnings, $18, in a feather bed, but the man by whom she sent for the goods made off with her money. A cruel loss. At thirty-five years of age Mrs. JAMES was left a widow, with five children to care for, but was not the woman to fold her hands and ask “What shall I do?” She read law that she might intelligently settle her husband’s estate, moved her family to Berea, and placed her daughters in Baldwin Institute, from which Emma graduated.

Mrs. JANES was remarkably endowed, impressing her personality upon with whom she associated. Her last residence was Cleveland, where, in the home of her daughter, Mary (Mrs. W.A. INGHAM), president of the woman’s department, centennial commission, her long and well spent earthly life was sweetly ended.
