THE COLQUHOUNS IN GALICIA

Updated January 28, 2001

About Our Family Research

Galicia, north-west Spain is, like Brittany, Cornwall, Ireland and Scotland, a part of the so-caled "Celtic Fringe" of western Europe; it certainly shares a lot of features in common, including its granitic rock foundations, its long Atlantic shoreline, its wind and rain-swept perennial greeness. It also shares similar cultural features such as bag-pipe (gaita) music, and centuries of emigration of "gallegos" to all corners of the globe...well, I married a Galician woman and we moved here after a spell in England. We've been here for nearly ten years.
Recently I have begun to look into my own family history..the Colquhouns of Luss, Loch Lomond. My great-grandfather, ISAAC COLQUHOUN was born in Strabane, County Tyrone ca.1839, was posted to Canada, where hemet and married his wife Emmeline. He was decorated for his part in the suppression Red River Rebellion and the family subsequently moved to Wales, where Capt.Issac was appointed Chief Constable, a position he ossupied until his death. I'm now trying to establish when the colquhouns of Dumbartonshire went over to Ireland, and would be pleased to hear from any one who has leads on the Colquhoun clan anywhere..

This photograph ( possibly wedding) taken in 1875,in Nova Scotia. The original is full-length and measures approx.15x20 inches. There is a photograph of the pair taken in similar pose in 1925, on the occasion of their 50th wedding anninversary. The second photograph was taken by my grandfather Aubrey Bertram Colquhoun, who had his studio in the basement of the family home in Swansea.
