2.  ELIJAH3 CORNWELL (OBEDIAH2, CORNWALL1) was born 1760 in Dinwiddie Co., VA, and died November 14, 1827 in Jasper Co., GA.  He married CATHERINE CAVENDER, daughter of EZEKIAL CAVENDER and ELIZABETH STALLAND.  She was born June 16, 1764 in Westmoreland, VA, and died July 19, 1853 in Jasper Co., GA.

Notes for ELIJAH CORNWELL:
Elijah Cornwell was the first of the Cornwell family to reside in and near Jasper County.  He cam to Jasper County in the fall of 1807.  He and his wife Catherine Cavender Cornwell had first moved from Dinwiddie county, VA, to North Carolina.  Five children were born to the couple in NC.  From Rowan County, NC, the family moved to Pendleton District, SC and then to Jackson County, GA in 1802.
Elijah purchased land in Jasper County along the Alcovy River.  That land is now a part of the Turtle Cove Development.  
The family lived on and farmed this land until Catherine's death.  
Both Elijah and Catherine are buried in the Old Cornwell Cemetery.  They had 10 children.

Notes for OBADIAH CORNWELL:
Obadiah Cornwell was born on September 7, 1805, the ninth child of Elijah and Catherine (Cavender) Cornwell.  Her married Mary Ann (Polly) Lane, the only daughter of Thomas and Rhoda (Nicholson) Lane. He made his home on land along the Alcovy River adjoining his father's homeplace and near the present location of Turtle cove Community Clubhouse.  
As farm activity increased, a gin, blacksmith and wheelwright shops and a barrel plant were added at the homesite, along with a distillery on nearby "Rackcoon Creek". The gin shops and distillery were destroyed in Nov. 1864 by Union  Army stragglers.  Before the Civil War, his orchard on Peach Orchard Hill was reputed to be one of the largest in the state of Georgia.
Obadiah maintained what is called "Open House" for his family and relatives.  It is said that he vowed that no man or beast would ever pass his door in hunger.  He was a Universalist in belief, a lover of poetry and history and a progressive member of the community.  
After he died in 1873, his wife lived on at the omestead until her death in 1897.  
Both husband and wife are buried at the Old Cornwell Cemetery.
They had 9 children.  Of his 3 sons, 2 were killed in the Civil War.  Eli was killed at the Battle of Averasboro, NC, and Joel was killed at Gettysburg, PA.

Notes for GEORGE WASHINGTON CORNWELL:
George Washington Cornwell was the tenth child of Elijah and Catherine (Cavender) Cornwell.  He owned a home on land near the Alcovy River that adjoined tht of his mother.  It was near his brothers' land also (Obadiah and elijah, Jr.).  He ran farms in both Jasper and Newton Counties.
He represented Jasper County in the Ga. State Legislature in 1855.
For several years, he and Obadiah maintained a school for children of their families.  This school was also attended by students from the family's relatives in Dekalb County.  
he was an early and active member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church located near Hardy's Crossroads in Jasper County.

6.  WILLIAM DAWSON5 CORNWELL (OBADIAH4, ELIJAH3, OBEDIAH2, CORNWALL1) was born December 09, 1836, and died 1889 in Jasper Co., GA.  He married ELMINAH SUSAN HARDY July 09, 1863.  She was born 1841.

Notes for WILLIAM DAWSON CORNWELL:
William Dawson Cornwell was born Sept. 9, 1835 in Jasper County, GA.  He was the 3rd child of Obadiah and Mary Ann "Polly" Cornwell.  He married Elmina Susan Hardy.
As Captain of Co. A, 32nd Ga. Rest. CSA, a unit composed mainly of members of families of th early settlers of Jasper County, he was stationed at Fort Sumter, SC.  He was wounded at the Battle of Olustee.  He later returned to duty and saw his oldest brother killed at the Bttle of Averasboro in North Carolina.
When he came back to Jasper County after the war, his father gave him land along the Ocmulgee River. He later increased his holdings to include the adjoining Dempsey's Ferry area.  The ferry was operated by the family for many years until forced to abandon the homestead by malaria caused by the creation of Jackson Lake.  A part of the originial home remains on the land, stil known as W.D. and Elmina Cornwell Homeplace.
William D. was active in the pulic affairs of the Mechanicsville Community.  He was an advocate for better schools in the county.  He was one of the organizers of the school later located near the present Mt. Zion Christian Church.  
He died ofpneumonia in 1889 and is buried in the W.P. Hardy Cemetery located near Hardy's Crossroads.

Notes for DAVIS LANE CORNWELL:
Davis Lane Cornwell was the 4th child of George Washington and Eliza (Lane) Cornwell.  His home was in what is now the Turtle Cove Development near the present water tank tower.  
He and hs family were among the organizers of the Mt. Zion Christian Church.
He was a private in Co. A, 32nd Rebt. INF and was stationed at Fort Sumter.  He was in the battles of Olustee and Averasboro-Bentonville.  At various time he served as the secretary to General Taliaferro, and as secretary and cartographer at the headquarters of General  Beauregard at Charleston, SC.
Before the war, he was a farmer and a teacher in the Mechanicxville Community.  When he returned to Jasper County following the civil war, he continued to farm while keeping an active interest in the school and also the political affairs of Jasper County.

Notes for JOHN LEE HARDY:
I remember being around Granpapa Hardy.  He had a shock of thick white hair and a big mustache.  He was very soft spoken and kind.  He lived with his oldest daughter, Eula, until his death in the house where he raised his family in Monticello.  
My uncle B.G. (Gwen Key Malone's husband) said that John Lee Hardy was the slowest walking man in Jasper County.  It must be true because my mother and I are often accused of walking too slowly.  However, he DID live to be in his 90's, never in a hurry.

Notes for LULA LANE:
Lula Lane Cornwell attended State Normal School and taught at the Smithboro School in Jasper County prior to her marriage.  
She was a member of the Christian Church near her hcildhood home.  However, she was also a devoted member and worker in the Women of the church of the Monticellow Presbyterian Church.  
She was president of the United Daughters of the confederacy for 25 years.  She made sure that the annual Memorial Services for Confederate Veterans of Jasper County and other school and civic programs sponsored by the UDC continued.

Notes for TELAH VIOLA HARDY:
Mama Key was a very sweet person.  She had long, dark,wavy hair that had very little gray in it even in old age.  She was a wonderful cook and her house was very nicely decorated.  She loved to play bridge.  Even when she was very sick, my mother (Jo Bridges) would deal out cards and hold them up so that Mama Key could read the hand of bridge.
On  Sundays, she would cook a big meal and serve it in the dining room at her home.  Everyone would sit around the table long after the meal to talk and tell stories.  There was always a lot of laughter and fun.
Her grandchildren used to put on productions on Sunday afternoons.  She would always sit attentively to watch the show.  
She liked the music of Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy (usually operettas).
She donated the organ to the Baptist Church in Monticello, GA.
The family Bible of William H. and Telah H. Key is in the possession of Josephine Key Bridges, his oldest daughter.  Entries are in Mama Key's handwriting for the most part.

Notes for WILLIAM HICKS KEY:
Papa Key was very kind.  I can remember his laughing.  He liked to chew tobacco and would offer it to the grandchildren.  No one ever took him up on it.
He loved his children and grandchildren and provided for them in every way that he could.  
He served in the Georgia State House of Representatives for several decades, rarely opposed for election.  He was instrumental in bringing in industry to Monticello and also drew up legislation to get a hospital for the county.
The bridge over the Ocmulgee River on the SW end of Jasper County is called the Bill Key Bridge.  I never heard anyone call him "Bill"--it was always "Mr. Billy" or "Colonel Key".  "Colonel" was a term used for attorneys a long time ago.
Papa Key served in various legal capacities in Monticello and Jasper County, GA.  
His office was located above the Benton Supply store building, up the stairs and to the right.  
Much of the furniture from the office is located in my (Joanne Cooper) home:  revolving bookshelves, glass-front bookshelves, index file (oak).  His daughter, Gwen Malone, has his rolltop desk.
Papa Key worked his way through the University of Georgia in Athens, GA as a waiter in the college dining hall.  His "customers" gave him a book of Tennyson's poems when he graduated.  It is in the possession of Josephine Key Bridges, his oldest daughter.  Another item in her possession is the Bible which he took with him to the University--it originally belonged to Mary Allen, a cousin, and has much of her family data in it.
