The following story was so graciously shared with me by Katie Elizabeth Bennett, descendant of Harriet M. Grace and James Bennett.

In Calhoun County, Florida, John, age 15, was handsome, witty, and in love with Chaffa Gregory, daughter of Jason Gregory. Her father didn't approve of him because he gambled too much, but worse, he lost! So John went out to Polk County, Texas to join his father, and make some real money. He promised Chaffa he would return for her.

He took his friend from Florida, Joe S. Stone, with him to Texas, and very shortly after, the two were mustered into Company H. 5th TX Infantry.

Corporals Grace and Stone were in Virginia December 1861 when Joe spotted a "Yankee", and at the same time, John was shot in the knee. Joe carried him to a medical station, then the two did not see each other for 43 years! Joe went back to Florida after the war.

John tried to contact Chaffa, but never reached her. He finally assumed she married someone else, but she hadn't, and she thought he had died in the war.

John went back to Texas after the war, and struggled financially with the rest of the family. It was not until about the 1890's that he prospered.

Chaffa's father's fortune was lost after the war, and in 1888, yellow fever was rampant in Florida, hitting Alachua County hard. The family had moved there in 1873. Out of fear, they headed back to their old home. They had to get through the militia stationed to quarantine the area, but spent the night in an abandoned house whose former occupants had died of Yellow Fever.

With her own hands, Chaffa buried her family there, and made her way, alone, to the old home place. She repaired the old mansion, and ran a warehouse. She also became postmistress.

After John's wife, Eliza Hogue, died in 1904, he discovered that his old war buddy, Joe Stone, was in Calhoun County, Florida. He sold his property and went to visit Joe for several months. Soon, he learned that Chaffa was still at the old home place, and available. They married July 10, 1906, and John ran the warehouse.

A little over two years later, as he walked to the landing on the river, he was murdered, and his body was thrown into the river.

Chaffa died in 1916. The Gregory mansion was moved across the river, and became part of Torreya State Park.
