RANCIS BARTOW GREGORY, DR.:
History of Stewart County, Georgia

Francis Bartow Gregory, physician, was born in Lumpkin County, Georgia in 1861, died Americus, Georgia in 1910. The Gregory home which his father had moved from down on the river to a site near the Court House square (the house being put together with pegs) is now owned by Mrs F. C. Hobbs. The son of Dr. William Anthony Gregory (1838-1885) and Allie Paul of Augusta, he married Ida Grace of Lumpkin,
Georgia, daughter of Tom and Imogene Grace, and niece of Captain and Mrs. Samuel Beall. Two children were born to this couple. Genie Gregory Reynolds and Paul Anthony Gregory.

Paul Anthony Gregory was the father of two sons, W. P. Gregory, of Atlanta, and Paul Anthony Gregory, Jr., who was killed in a plane crash November 21, 1943, a 1st. Lt. in the Air Corps in WWII. Paul Anthony Gregory III is a resident of Marietta, Georgia, and the father of Paul Anthony Gregory IV, who was born in 1965.

Dr. Gregory was a graduate of Mercer University, second honor man, and graduated from Tulane University in New Orleans in Medicine. He was a member of The American Medical Association and a 32nd degree Mason. He was a clerk of Lumpkin Baptist Church from 1889-1905, and sang bass in the choir where his mother, then his wife, was organist. He took a Post Graduate course in treatment of children, at the Post Graduate Medical College of New York City. His father, Dr. William Anthony Gregory, was commission as Surgeon, with the rank of Captain, in Company E, 31st Georgia Infantry, by Governor Joseph E. Brown, July 12, 1864.

Three Gregory brothers, Robert, William, and Sam, came to America in Colonial days and settled in Rockcastle County, Virginia. Rockcastle County being a mountainous country where Natural Bridge is located, the Gregory brothers found the soil unproductive, so they moved west and south. William stopped in North Carolina, John and Sam settled in Kentucky. Ivy William Gregory, grandfather of Dr. Francis Bartow Gregory, was born in North Carolina, in 1808, and married Lucinda Turner, born January 08, 1815, before coming to Stewart County about 1835

Submitted by Mrs. Genie Gregory Reynolds of Atlanta.
