Notes for PAUL ANTHONY GREGORY, JR.: From the Marietta Daily News Tuesday November 23, 1943 Information was received in Marietta Thursday afternoon that First Lieutenant Paul Anthony Gregory, Jr., of the U S Army Air Force was killed in a plane crash on Sunday night in Pennsylvania while on a routine flight. Lt. Gregory who was 22 years old was the elder son of Mr. and Mrs Paul A. Gregory of Marietta, and his wife is the former Miss Ada Byrd McNeal, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank McNeal, of this city. On receipt of the information, Mr. and Mrs. McNeal left immediately for Columbus, Georgia to join Lt. Gregory's wife and six month old son who have resided there since he was assigned to Fort Benning about two and a half months ago. They are returning to Marietta today. Mr. McNeal phoned members of the family here this morning that no details of the accident were yet available. News of the tragic accident struck a stunning blow to innumerable relatives and friends of the popular young officer and his wife. His father, Paul A. Gregory, Sr. an insurance firm executive is a veteran of the First World War, serving as a First Lieutenant, and was wounded in France. His mother, the former Miss Jeannette Pomeroy, of Atlanta, is public welfare field representative of the Seventh District. His only brother, Pomeroy Gregory is an Air Cadet in training at Mississippi State College. He graduated from the Marietta High School in the class of 1938 and from Clemson College in the class of 1942, receiving his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Army. After a short period of service he applied for a transfer to the Air Corps, and received his wings as a First Lieutenant this summer. He married Miss Ada Byrd McNeal on May 30, 1942, and they have one son, Paul Anthony Gregory, III. Funeral and burial will be in Marietta but all plans are awaiting further information from the Army. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
