MELVIN SCHILLING DIES ON HUNTING TRIP TO COLORADO

Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nada at 1:00 p.m. today, Wednesday October 23rd 1957 for Melvin E. Schilling, 36, of Houston and a former resident of Garwood, who died suddenly Saturday while on a hunting trip to Colorado.
Mr. Schilling was on a hunt with friends at Cortez Colorado when he complained of feeling ill. He retired to his tourist court and was found later dead from pneumonia.
His father, Louis C. Schilling of Garwood and a brother, L.D. Schilling of Columbus Tx. a cousin, James Allan Schilling and A.C. Abell of Garwood were also hunting in Colorado but in another section. They were located and remained to see the body shipped by train to Houston.
Funeral services were held in Houston at 8:30 a.m. at Resurrection Church. Boulevard Funeral Home was in charge.
The body was moved to Nada where services were held at 1 p.m. at St Mary's Church, followed by interment in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetary.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Regina Schilling, a son, Jimmy Ray Schilling; a daughter, Linda Caroll Schilling, all of Houston; two brothers, L.D. and Denver both of Columbus; and a sister, Mrs. Nelda Larsen of Roseburg, Ore. and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis C. Schilling of Garwood.
Many citizens of the community wil remember Mr. Schilling as a stellar basketball player for the Garwood High School in the late 1930,s when he affectionately earned the nick name of "Crawdad". Friends and relatives in the area were deeply saddened by the sudden death of this young man.

ATTEND SCHILLING RITES

Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nada last Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. for Melvin E. Schilling who passed away on a hunting trip October 19th. Burial was in the Nada Catholic Cemetary.
The funeral was largely attended. Among out of town relatives present were: Mr. and Mrs. Benton Starkey, Sweetwater; Mr. and Mrs. Earl Van Dorn, Austin; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wilcox, Corpis Christi; Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Fickle, Mr. and Mrs. Will Kelley, Miss Ethel Kelley, all of Waco; Mrs. Laura Church and grandson Aaron Wendt, Houston; and Mr. Schilling's sister, Mrs. George Larsen of Roseburg, Oregon.
