I. COURTENAY LINE – Origin in France

 

   French nobleman Sire Athon de (of) Courtenay of Courtenay in Loiret Province, France, invented the Courtenay surname in the year 1010 A.D.

 

   Until the end of the Dark Ages, over 1,000 years ago, no one had such a thing as a last name. When the custom of last names began, Sire Athon took the name of the domain he ruled, and, being the only son, became the original ancestor of all Courtenay families to follow.

I. COURTENAY LINE – In England

 

   At this point, the French Courtenay nobility married English nobility, a trend which was repeated both directions, henceforth for over 331 years.

 

   The Courtenays crossed from France to England in 1152 with Eleanor of Acquitaine, new wife of King Henry II who so bounteously brought Bordeaux to her royal husband. 

 

   By 1173, they had established themselves as one of the most powerful Devon families by the marriage of Reginald de Courtenay with Hawisse, heiress of the barony and honour of Okehampton.  This honour was the largest in Devon and with it Reginald de Courtenay became Baron of Okehampton and hereditary Sheriff of the county.  Interestingly, the barony included two of Oakford’s Domesday manors, Ausa (later East and West Apps) and Odeburna (the modern Woodburn); East Apps shared a common boundary in 1839 with the region known as Loosemoor. 

 

   The honour of Plympton, second only to Okehampton, also came to the Courtenays by marriage and when in 1345 Hugh de Courtenay married Margaret de Bohun, grand-daughter of King Edward I, the family became the most influential in the west country.  Hugh had succeeded as 2nd Earl in 1335, a royal affirmation of their pre-eminence.

 

   After the family’s original English castle, Okehampton, was destroyed by mandate during a conflict, Powderham Castle became the birthplace of many generations of the Courtenay family. The Earl of Devon also included title to 8 manors within Devonshire and numerous other properties, plus ownership of counties, castles, and properties acquired through marriage with other royalty and nobility.

 

   Today, after over 600 years, Powderham Castle is still occupied by the Earl of Devon Courtenay family. The Courtenays offer tours of the castle and 4,000 acres of the estate, with docking facilities on the River Exe for boaters.

Notes:    Bishop of Hereford; Bishop of London; Archbishop of Canterbury.

 He was born in Exeter about 1342, and studied law at Stapledon Hall, Oxford.

 He was elected Chancellor of the University, and held Pretends at Exeter, Wells, and

York.

At the age of twenty-eight he was consecrated Bishop of Hereford, and six

years later, at age 34, became Bishop of London.

He took part with William of Wykeham in defending the rights of the clergy:

on the one hand, against the attacks made upon them by John of Gaunt, and

on the other, against the exactions of the Pope.

In 1381 he was translated to Canterbury, and exerted himself for the suppression

of Lollardism. Wyclif's opinions were formally condemned at a Council held in

his presence at Blackfriars in 1382.

 Courtenay died in 1396 at Maidstone, and is thought by some to have been buried there,

but there is more reason to believe that his body was transferred to Canterbury

where his regicidal monument can still be seen today.

Margaret COURTENAY

Born: ABT 1499

Died: AFT 2 Jul 1520/ 15 Apr 1526

Notes: Margaret was the daughter of William Courtenay, Earl of Devon, and the

Princess Catherine, and that she died at Holcombe, choked by a fishbone, A.D.

1512. Says on her tombe. This was found for her, in the person of Henry, Lord

Herbert, eldest son of Charles Somerset, Earl of Worcester; and she was living

at Richmond, in attendance on the infant Princess Mary, on the second of Jul,

1520. She died before her husband, who married, secondly, Elizabeth, daughter of

Sir Anthony Browne. So we can only conclude that the inscription at Colyton is a

mendacious inscription, and was invented to support the tradition about "little

chokebone", as the natives call her, and which, like many other traditions about

the Courtenays, can have had no foundation in fact.
