Descendants of William Fowler

Generation No. 4

4. DANIEL4 FOWLER (WILLIAM3, WILLIAM2, WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1714 in Chowan District, NC, and died July 28, 1783 in Duplin County, NC. He married MARY JANE ROLLINS Abt. 1745, daughter of EDWARD ROLLINS. She was born 1725, and died Abt. 1793.

Notes for D
ANIEL FOWLER:
Daniel Fowler I (1714 - 1778) Married Mary Rollins (born ca.1725) in about 1745. Mary was pro

bably a sister
(perhaps even a daughter of Edward Rollins of Bladen Co. NC.) A1768 land sale to Rober
t Rollins confirms the
close relation of the families. Daniels birth date is from M . C. Bagley, and a death da
te of 1793 has also been
penned into the Library of Congress of her Chart but it is much more probable that Danie
l died shortly before
1779. It may have been his wife who died in 1793, one of the most compelling reasons fo
r an earlier death date is
that he is not the lone Daniel who appears in the census of 1790 and that one underage s
on (Francis) remained
who was living with his brother Richard, although the possibility that the father was li
ving undetectable with a
married daughter is not excluded. There are other reasons too as we shall see. Daniel`
s male children were John
(b.1747),
William (b.ca. 1752), Daniel II (b.ca. 1755), Richard (b.ca. 1758),
Peter (b.ca. 1762), and Francis (b.ca. 1770). There are slight indications of a sevent
h son (b.ca. 1774), but
certainly they had some female children one of whom was probably the Elizabeth who marri
ed Edmund Spivey
according to Revolutionary War pension #R10002.
Daniel was probably a brother of John of Bladen (see chapter 3 ) and of D`Arcy, the Samp
son Co. loyalist who
was interned at Halifax in 1775. This rare name, un repeated in subsequent generations p
ossibly for patriotic
reasons, and it`s bearer`s Tory sympathies strongly suggest a recent English origin fo
r these Fowlers, Consistent
with the Nansemond story of James Fowler.
Daniel had extensive property holdings in Duplin Co. in the part just west of the line t
hat latter became Sampson
Co. Up until 1774, he bought and sold at least six plats in the Cane Creek - Six Runs ar
ea. He also owned land
on an absentee basis north of Whiteville in Brunswick Co. (later Columbus Co.) which h
e (or his son Daniel)
disposed of as late as 1784.
The above by Richard Gildart Fowler in his book, (A History Of The Fowler Family Famil
y OF Southern North
Carolina.) ( WSH)

He married Mary Rollins 1745. She is the daughter of Edward Rollins. A 1778 land sale t
o Robert Rollins
confirms the close relation of the Rollins and Fowler families. Robert is believed to b
e Mary Rollins Fowler's
brother. Daniel Fowler's birth date is from M.C. Bagley, and a death date of 1793 has be
en penned into the
Library of Congress copy of her chart but we now know that 1793 is the death date of hi
s wife, Mary Rollins
Fowler. Many think Daniel died in 1779, shortly after the Dec. 22, 1778 land deed to Rob
ert Rollins but he could
have lived several years after this. Daniel Fowler had extensive property holdings i
n a section of Duplin County,
N.C. which later became part of Sampson County in 1784. This land was located along Cran
e Creek and on the
west side of Six Run Creek. Most of Daniel's land ran along the fork of Crane Creek an
d Buck Horn Creek. He
acquired this land within a twenty year span between 1753 and 1773. He also owned land o
n an absentee basis
north of Whiteville in Brunswick County, N.C. (located now in Columbus County) which h
e (or his son, Daniel)
disposed of as late as 1784. If Daniel Fowler the father sold this land in 1784, then w
e know that he died after
1784 and before 1790. Daniel Fowler, the father cannot be the lone Daniel Fowler on th
e 1790 Sampson
County, N.C. census. This Daniel Fowler has a wife and three young sons which fit Danie
l Fowler, the son. We
also found Daniel and Mary Fowler's sons, William and Richard on the 1790 census of Samp
son County. Daniel
Fowler's widow, Mary Rollins Fowler and their son, Thomas, born 1771, are living with th
eir son, Richard Fowler
and his family in Sampson County in 1790. We found sons John Fowler and Peter Fowler liv
ing in Georgetown
District, S.C. in the part that became Horry County in 1802. The youngest son, Francis F
owler, born 1774 is
living with brother Peter in South Carolina. This accounts for all of Daniel's family ex
cept him. Now we know that
he died before the 1790 Census. He was living December 22, 1778 when he signed a deed an
d may have lived
until after 1784 when his Brunswick County land was sold by a Daniel Fowler. By the tim
e of the Revolutionary
War, Daniel and his sons were prosperous farmers. Daniel Fowler served the Patriot caus
e even though he was
pass the age of sixty according to family tradition. His three oldest sons, John, Danie
l Jr., and William all fought in
the war as did daughter Elizabeth's husband Edmund Spivey. Columbus County, N.C. or Horr

that may be Daniel Fowler, the father. This was his land. If this is Daniel selling hi
s own land then we know that
Daniel did not die until after 1784 and before the 1790 census. But it could be the son
, Daniel, selling his father's
land after his death but we found no record giving the land to him. Much confusion has a
risen because of the
unheralded transition from the one Daniel to the other, which most feel can be placed af
ter Dec. 22, 1778. I am
giving all the land record here that could be either Daniel. We are almost sure the res
