Notes for Christian Martin:
(Biography from [BALC 1903] Submitted by Wanza Campbell)

Christian Martin was born in Earl township, where his life was spent, the greater part on the farm where his
grandson, Isaac Martin,is now living. This farm, on which he located soon after his marriage, contains 150
acres, and is situated two miles northeast of New Holland. At the present time it bears the name of " Big
Spring Farms" and is one of the notable places of the county. Most of its substantial and attractive
improvements were made by its present occupant who is known as " Springs Isaac."

Christian Martin married Magdalena Eby, and both lived to an advanced age. They had a family of eight
children,of whom Daniel, Christian, Isaac and John are deceased; Elizabeth married John Sensenig; Annie
married Henry Musser; Mary married John Groff; Lydia married Jacob Stauffer. All were members of the
Mennonite Church.

John Martin, the father of Isaac, was born on the farm where that gentleman now lives, and there was
reared and spent his life following farming and becoming one of the most successful men of his day. He
bought farms for his sons Isaac and David. He married Annie Weaver, daughter of David and Christiana
Weaver, both of Earl township, and she is still living in her eighty-fifth year. The father died Sept.. 28, 1887,
when he was a little over seventy-six years old. He was a member of the Mennonite Church as is his
widow. They had a family of five children: David resides in Earl township; Magdalena is the widow of Peter
Zimmerman, and lives in East Earl township; Isaac is mentioned below; Mary is the wife of Christian
Zimmerman and has her home in East Earl township; Anna married Joseph Sensinger.

Isaac Martin was born Jan. 25, 1842, on the farm where he has since made his home. He has always been
a broad gauged and public - spirited man, and his influence in the community has been of the very best. He
has kept fully abreast of the times and is widely known as an intelligent and upright citizen, always ready to
assist any good movement. For nine years he has been school director. He is a stockholder in the New
Holland Bank, and is the owner of the old homestead, a farm of 150 acres, having also a half interest in
Martin's mill' a farm of fifty acres in Ephrata township also belongs to Mr. Martin, as well as property in
New Holland and Cocalico. He also owns real estate in Philadelphia.

Mr. Martin was married November 10, 1864, to Miss Annie Musser, who was born in Earl township
March 14, 1845, a daughter of Martin and Mary (Weaver) Musser. To this union have come five children;
Eli is a farmer and implement dealer of Earl township; John died unmarried; Isaac died unmarried; Sadac
died Sept. 27, 1901 leaving a wife, Mrs. Lizzie (Nolt) Martin, and three children, Anna, Martha and Isaac;
Mary died single. Mr. and Mrs. Martin are worthy and substantial people, and are highly esteemed

Samuel Oberholtzer c1755-wp 9/16/1822, lived in Warwick Twp on land purchased in 1791. For many years the Mennonites held services in his home and c 1800 built a log house in his woods for worship and school purposes. It was the first church in Rothsville and the first Mennonite meetinghouse in the present Hess-Landis Valley and Hammer Creek Districts. In 1819 Samuel bought a farm in Reistville, Lebanon co. The family burial plot is north of Rothsville with an incorrect marker. (The tombstone credits this Samuel for being the Immigrant.)

My note: I am not sure if the census is referring to this William. It would make him too old. Possibly this William's father.

Check the possibility that the William married in Dauphin county could be this William's father!

I wanted to get this to you in between your trips to the mountains. I
just may have stumbled upon a clue for Anna (Nancy) Miller Christ. I was
looking through my microfilm roll re Church Records of the Heidelberg
Congregation, 1765-1864, copied by Wm. J. Hinke. There were many Millers.
Then I noticed an Anna b Oct 17, 1810, parents Nicholas and (Eva) Catharine
Miller. She would be about the right age as our Anna Christ was 60 years of
age on the 1870 Census. I went back and copied all the Millers I could
find. Here are the children of Nicholas and Catharine Miller:
Sarah b Feb 21, 1802, bapt May 2, 1802, sponsors: George Noll and Anna
Maria
Engel b Oct 16, 1803, bapt Feb 26, 1804, sponsors: Jacob Miller and
Christine
Joseph b Dec 25, 1806, bapt Apr 19, 1807, sponsors: John Krumm and
Anna Maria
Ludwig b Oct 13, 1808, bapt Apr 3, 1809, sponsors: Henry Ibach and
Barbara
Anna b Oct 17, 1810, bapt Apr 15, 1811, sponsors: Jacob Krobb and
Eliabeth
Maria b Sept 17, 1812, bapt Apr 19, 1813, sponsors: Catharine Miller
Magdalene, b Nov 1, 1814, bapt July 2, 1815, sponsors: George Miller
and Catharine
Susanna b Nov 1, 1814, bapt July 2, 1815, sponsors: Michael Miller and
Susanna (twins) ??
Henry b Jan 19, 1818, bapt Feb 7, 1818, sponsors: Henry Miller and
Susanna
That makes nine children. There may have been more as some pages were
said to have been torn out of the church record book. There was also a
Philip and Catharine Meess, but no Anna was born to them. So, what do you
think? I have a good feeling about this.
I went ahead and mailed requests for the death records of both Caroline
Christ Snavely and Simon Thomas Christ. Maybe we can get an Anna/Nancy on
one of them at least--especially with your Henry's, too. (Joyce Gordon)

  Notes for Elisabeth Miller:
I believe this Elizabeth is, Elizabeth Wunderlich, born 1/13/1787, daughter of John and Catharine Heil Wunderlich. (This is evidentally wrong) Keep the note till you get this family straightened out!
