Benard Jr. was first a stenographer in the Department of Public Safety. He later became a bond salesman for Provident Bank. In 1931-32 he made a "fatal " decision and took a job as a Junior Investment Broker, or stockbroker. It was "fatal" in that soon following the Great Depression hit. He lost everything. Because of this, his wife, Florence Terdoest, who formerly was a secretary, belittled herself by doing laundry for a wealthy neighbor. At this time, any job was worth the effort. Before the depression, they both lived in a house in Hyde Park which they purchased from Judge John Druffle.
