John P. Blankenship was the most well known Blankenship in Blount Co., after serving with the Third East Tenn. Volunteer Infantry Regiment, U.S.A. during the Civil War as a surgeon with the rank of Lieutenant. Dr. John P. Blankenship became Blount County, county Physician and Health Officer in 1858 and after the Civil War continued this position until 1900. In 1883 he became president of Bount Co., Medical Society, In 1882 to 1883 he was the temperance educational editor of the East Tenn. News published at Maryville as examining surgeon for pensioners under appointment from the general government.
