BIOGRAPHY: Charlottetown Guardian - 9 Aug 1940, page 1 "Inquest opens into death of James Ford --- Charlottetown man instantly killed in highway accident at Southport ---Mr. James Ford, 50-year-old Charlottetown building contractor was instantly killed when a car which he was driving was in collison with a truck at Keppoch corner near Southport at 6:45 yesterday morning. Police said the truck was driven by Mr. Russel Downe. Miss Agnes Dicks and Mr. Roy Oakes, who were also in Mr. Ford's car, were injured in the accident. Mr. Oakes received a severe cut on the nose and other lacerations on the face and body. Miss Dicks was taken to the city hospital suffering from severe cuts to the face. The accident occurred when the three were returning to the city after spending an all night visit at the home of Mr. Stewart about 6 miles from the city. According to the evidence given at the inquest last night Mr. Ford was attempting to pass a loaded gravel truck when he collided with another truck which was coming towards him. This truck was not loaded. The entire top of the car was torn off and Mr. Ford was found with his feet in the car and his head hanging on the ground on the left hand side of the machine. The other two occupants were able to move around. The car was a 1940 Plymouth Coupe. It was in collision with an International truck. The Dicks girl was taken to the hospital while Oakes was able to go home after receiving medical attention. Yesterday morning at 11 o'clock the following jury empaneled and swore in the Dr. I. J. Yeo coroner, at the Cutcliffe Funeral Home. Messrs. James A. Brady (foreman), W. A. Rix, James Power, Patrick After viewing the body the inquest was adjourned until last night at 8 o'clock when eight witnesses were examined. Inquest Last Night Roy Oakes testified that he lived in Charlottetown, 84 Douglas Street, was a contractor and married. He was in the accident and (Continued on page 8, Col 2) said it occurred when he, James Ford and Agnes Dick were coming to town about 6:30 a.m. yesterday. They were at a Mr. Stewart's house about a mile up the Montague Road about 6 miles from Charlottetown. They were about four hours having gone there about 1 a.m. They were just talking and had lunch then left for Charlottetown he said. He had nothing to drink but had one small drink of alcohol about 8 o'clock in the evening, witnesses stated. He had none with Mr. Ford, he added. Witness said he was sober. BIOGRAPHY: Charlottetown Guardian - 9 Aug 1940, page 1 "Inquest opens into death of James Ford --- Charlottetown man instantly killed in highway accident at Southport ---Mr. James Ford, 50-year-old Charlottetown building contractor was instantly killed when a car which he was driving was in collison with a truck at Keppoch corner near Southport at 6:45 yesterday morning. Police said the truck was driven by Mr. Russel Downe. Miss Agnes Dicks and Mr. Roy Oakes, who were also in Mr. Ford's car, were injured in the accident. Mr. Oakes received a severe cut on the nose and other lacerations on the face and body. Miss Dicks was taken to the city hospital suffering from severe cuts to the face. The accident occurred when the three were returning to the city after spending an all night visit at the home of Mr. Stewart about 6 miles from the city. According to the evidence given at the inquest last night Mr. Ford was attempting to pass a loaded gravel truck when he collided with another truck which was coming towards him. This truck was not loaded. The entire top of the car was torn off and Mr. Ford was found with his feet in the car and his head hanging on the ground on the left hand side of the machine. The other two occupants were able to move around. The car was a 1940 Plymouth Coupe. It was in collision with an International truck. The Dicks girl was taken to the hospital while Oakes was able to go home after receiving medical attention. Yesterday morning at 11 o'clock the following jury empaneled and swore in the Dr. I. J. Yeo coroner, at the Cutcliffe Funeral Home. Messrs. James A. Brady (foreman), W. A. Rix, James Power, Patrick After viewing the body the inquest was adjourned until last night at 8 o'clock when eight witnesses were examined. Inquest Last Night Roy Oakes testified that he lived in Charlottetown, 84 Douglas Street, was a contractor and married. He was in the accident and (Continued on page 8, Col 2) said it occurred when he, James Ford and Agnes Dick were coming to town about 6:30 a.m. yesterday. They were at a Mr. Stewart's house about a mile up the Montague Road about 6 miles from Charlottetown. They were about four hours having gone there about 1 a.m. They were just talking and had lunch then left for Charlottetown he said. He had nothing to drink but had one small drink of alcohol about 8 o'clock in the evening, witnesses stated. He had none with Mr. Ford, he added. Witness said he was sober. He claimed he met Ford on Euston Street. He had been visiting Stephen MacMillan and coming out met Miss Dicks. They were talking when Ford came along. They left town about 12:30 a.m. as Ford was talking about going across the river to look for carpenters. Witness said he left his car and went but they did not find any carpenters. They called at Mr. Pippy's who was a carpenter, but there was nobody home. They then came back down and called at Stewart's." BIOGRAPHY: From Lucy Fandek - Grandpa was a farmer and also owned a sawmill. By the time I was old enough to remember things, Grandpa and grandma were getting up they’re in years. I never knew grandpa without a beard or with two hands. Mama told me that grandpa's left sleeve got caught in the circular saw of the mill and drug his arm in to the saw. He lost his arm just below the left elbow. He had an artificial hand and arm, but I never knew him to wear it. Perhaps he saved it just for only dress occasions, or maybe it wasn't very functional. I do remember him wearing and using a hook that he could open and close. And when I was little, he would beckon me over to him and ask, "Is that a wear hole or a tear hole"? and the next thing you'd know, he'd stick his hook into a hole on my slacks and rrrrriiiiipppp. Didn't make any difference what I would say, because he was going to rip it anyway. I wonder what my mother thought of his tricks. She never ever said anything about the bigger holes in our clothes. On those long hot and muggy days when I was young, grandpa and I would go sit on the bench he'd made, in the long shadows of the afternoon. Sometimes there would be a breath of air to cool us, sometimes the sweat would trickle down our foreheads. It would drip off the end of his nose. The bench sat along the south wall of the porch where we could look off across the pastures, garden, the barn, and the county road. It was easy to see Mr. and Mrs. Goszewski's place from here. We always thought Kluge's drove too fast on the dirt road. And without fail the cloud of dust sifted our way. (They were neighbors that lived further up the road on the top of the hill). One time Grandpa said, "I bet you can't catch that fly". So with accurate aim and speed I swiped one up that had landed on my leg, and proudly boasted my catch, whereupon he grabbed my closed hand and squished the fly in my palm. I was told that he could really play a fine harmonica when he was young and that he played for dances. He played his "mouth organ" every day that I can remember. He was never without it. If it wasn't in his left shirt pocket it was in his right hand. I'd say one of his favorite tunes was "The Bear Went Over The Mountain". Many times I would lay my face on his chest and grew up knowing the tunes he played simply by the rise and fall of his chest as he breathed in and out for the different note patterns. I never asked to play his harmonica, but I bet I could have. Grandpa always wore a plaid shirt, cotton, flannel or otherwise, pants that were too large in the waist, (at least to my way of thinking) and suspenders. He had his own smell which I was very fond of. It was grandpa. He loved his apple trees and the flower gardens and me. He was always nice to me and always had a hug and a smile for me. By the time I turned fifteen, grandpa had suffered numerous strokes. They were usually small, but one by one they managed to incapacitate him in one way or another. I went to live with grandpa and grandma that year (1961) and stayed there until his death in 1963. William married Myrtle Elizabeth COOK, daughter of Thomas H. COOK and Elizabeth Marie LEMBECK. One of my earliest memories of her, and if I close my eyes I can still see it, she was driving the team home from the field where she had been plowing. She wore a floppy straw hat, bibbed denim coveralls and a plaid shirt. I remember it had a lot of red in it. Maybe it was one of grandpa's. And the straw hat had a frayed edge on one side. The lines were wrapped around both of her arms and it scared me and I remember thinking if the team runs they will drag her. She worked hard and carried an extra load because of grandpa's handicap. She had barn chores, course most women on farms then did. I also remember going over to grandma's one time to "visit" and found her up on the roof putting on new paper. She was in her coveralls again. Those were the only two times I ever saw my grandmother wear anything but her house dress and an apron. She grew the best flower gardens around. I swear she had the best raspberry patch, too. Sweet Williams must have been a favorite of hers because it grew everywhere. Today, it is my favorite. Grandma's house was a favorite place for birthday and holiday gatherings, and for no special occasion at all. Her kitchen was grand in my opinion. You came into the kitchen off the porch to a linoleum floor, ruffled blue and white plaid curtains on the two kitchen windows on your right, and immediately to your left was the wood stove and bakers cabinet. It was handsomely hand carved. The old wooden kitchen table sat under the two windows when it wasn't pulled out for a group, and was always covered with a clean, crisp tablecloth. On one far wall sat a couch and the refrigerator. The kitchen was wallpapered. We would be greeted with the smells of buns baking in the wood stove oven, pots of all kinds boiling and simmering on top of the stove, things "keeping warm" in the warming ovens. The table would be pulled out into the middle of the floor and expanded to its limit with all the extra boards put in. It would take several tablecloths to cover it all, plates and chairs and silverware for the crowd. Never a meal was tasted without a blessing. Her meals were the most delicious. Mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetables from the garden, meat, jams, pickles and always her homemade breads and buns. And always a cake with boiled frosting. There was love and laughter and joy all around and in every corner of her home. The year and a half that I lived with her and grandpa were a gift to me that I recognize now. I remember back to getting off the school bus and being greeted to the warmth and the radio was playing and the tune was a lively one, she would grab me and around the room room we would dance and twirl. I don't know who laughed the most. Those had to have been difficult years for her, but she never let on to me they were. Each night I would be the last one to bed. I would go check at their bedroom door and see that they were "in" for the night. Grandma slept next to the wall and grandpa on the outside. That way they could hold hands when they fell asleep, grandma said. She said they had fallen asleep that way every night since the day they got married. In the morning I would try to be first up to get the fire started. Grandma had taught me how to cut shavings on the smaller pieces of wood so they would catch fire easier. She had an old butcher knife for that purpose. Grandma gave me a beautiful water pitcher and bowl that had belonged to her mother (Elizabeth Lembeck). This same set sat on the dresser in my room upstairs at grandma and grandpa's house. The set came from Germany. Today it graciously sits on an old dresser in the spare bedroom of our home, the room that I call my mother’s room. 224 F iii.
