John and Anna were secretly married. This information was kept from his family. It was discovered and revealed during the investigation of Richard and Bryan's murders.

At some point John owned and ran the Maxwelton Club. Which was a known hang out of the Egan Rats Gang. At the urging of Anna he sold the club and later became and IRS agent for many years and retired from that position.
