May 25, 1965 - Missoula Man Killed By High-Tension Line

A Missoula crane operator was electrocuted early Tuesday when the cable from the truck-crane he was operating made contact with a high tension line carrying 12,000 volts.

Thomas E. Waldbillig, 31, 1610 Missoula Ave., was operating an M&S Ready-Mix crane near Ft. Missoula when the accident occurred.

Detective Ralph Fisher, sheriff's department, reported that Mr. Waldbillig was working near the M&S Company's pre-stress plant near Ft. Missoula and had backed his truck about 18 feet from a high-tension line. Fisher said the cable from the crane was swinging back and forth, striking the electrical line.

Mr. Waldbillig got out of the cab of the truck, walked back to the crane section and was electrocuted when he touched that part of the truck, Fisher reported.

Fisher said three men witnessed the accident and that they reported attempting to warn Waldbillig of the danger but their shouts were apparently not heard because of engine noise from the truck.

Mr. Waldbillig was born Dec. 17, 1934, in Missoula. He was graduated from Missoula County High School in 1954 and went to work as a mechanic for M&S Ready-Mix immediately after graduation. In 1956 he entered the Army Engineers Unit and was discharged in 1958. He then returned to work for M&S Ready-Mix. He was a member of Missoula Lodge 13, AF&AM.

He is survived by the widow, Janice; two sons, Wayne, 5, and Mark, 1, and a daughter, Patricia, 4.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Squire-Simmons-Carr Mortuary.
