Descendants of Joseph Bemis

      9. Ephraim2 Bemis (Joseph1)64 was born 25 Aug 1656 in Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts64,65, and died Aft. 18 Nov 171266. He married Elizabeth.

Notes for Ephraim Bemis:
[Bond:680]: "Ephraim, [7 and 9] settled in Watertown, where the births of four of his children are recorded, but the account of the family is brief. He probably had other children besides those four recorded, and it is probable that his family, or some part of it, moved to Windham and Hampton, in Windham Co., Conn."
------------------------------------
[Draper:5] Living in 1738 in Windham Ct.

[Draper:34-5] "They settled in Watertown, Mass, where the births of four of their children are recorded: there were probably several others, but as the family removed subsequently to Windham and Hampton, in Windham County, Conn., the younger children were probably born in the latter places of settlement. The Records of Watertown give very meager accounts of this branch.

Ephraim Bemis was a private in Capt. Joseph Sylls Company, in King Phillips War, and, (NEHGR:1889:43:263] received for his services in that campaign on Dec. 20, 1675. £3. 8sh. 4d. and on June 24, 1676. £3. sh. 5. on Aug. 24, 1676. £3. sh. 5. In Bodges "Soldiers in King Phillip's War" p. 360 he is named as of the garrison of Groton two of the above payments are mentioned as well as an additional one on Jan. 25, 1675-6 of sh. 12 on p. 376. He and Joseph Bemis are mentioned as soldiers from Watertown, giving the amounts paid them. In a list of Grantees of Narragansett Twship No. 4, confirmed by the Court Jan. 13, 1738, Ephriam Bemis received his assignment for services in King Phillip's War. He is mentioned as being alive at Windham, Ct. This Twship No. 4, is now Greenwich, Mass."

[Draper:36] "The author (Draper) has been entirely unsuccessful in obtaining absolute proof of the parentage of 384, 385, and 386 (Daniel, James and Ephraim), but is fully convinced that they were the sons of Ephraim and Elizabeth who were born in Watertown. All accounts agree that the Windham County Conn. Bemis's were from there; and, as the date perfectly agree, of removal and settlement, it is a fair and honest assumption that the line of descent is correct.

Of James (385) there is a Windham Record, that on Jan. 29, 1731. Nathanial Bemis and his wife Abigail Hovey were summoned before the church to testify against James Bemis for "hard drinking.""

The following passages concerning "Church History of Ashford, Connecticut," reflect upon Ephraim and some of his activities:

"The discipline of the church was preserved with very much of the mint-tithing exactness which was characteristic of the period, while much liberality was exercised with regard to some matters which are now considered as of great practical importance. For example, on one occasion Ephraim Bemis was charged with selling strong liquor in small quantities upon a certain occasion, and the question was raised as to whether he was guilty of a " confessable fault " in so doing, but the church decided in the negative."

and later in the same section,

"The methods and action of these Baptists and Separatists were very offensive to the strict church people, and the preaching of Solomon Paine especially was so obnoxious that efforts were made to stop him by legal process. February 15th, 1745, while Paine was preaching in a private house, complaint was made to justice Tiffany, who, upon searching his legal authority, was clearly convinced "that it was an unlawful meeting for Paine to come to Ashford to preach and exhort," and thereupon granted a warrant for his arrest. Constable Bemis went to the house to serve it. Taking hold of Paine he told him that he had no right to preach, and that he must go before the justice to answer for his unlawful preaching. Paine vehemently stigmatized the law as being suggested by the Devil, and refused to respect it or obey the summons. Bemis then called upon several persons. to assist him, who at first refused, but when reminded that the law had a penalty for such refusal, they " gently took Paine from the stage whereon he was preaching, and carried him out of the door and set him down." But Paine stubbornly refused to go before the justice, whereupon "they took him in a very gentle way and set him on a horse and led him to justice Tiffany's," where he was appropriately rebuked and then dismissed. The arresting party was afterward indicted for a riot, in which the charge set forth "that with riotous intent and with force and arms they did assault the person of said Solomon Paine, and pulled him onto the floor and carried him half a mile distant, to his great hurt and abuse and the disturbance of others." The county court acquitted them, but adjudged that they should pay costs, but on their appeal to the general assembly, this charge was also remitted."

John Bemis, Father of Samuel.

John, the ninth child of Joseph, was a farmer. He married Mary Harrington in 1680 and lived at Watertown. So far as his relation to town affairs and general usefulness are known, he appears to have maintained the same relative standing in the community achieved by his father and belong to what is usually called the well-to-do middle-class. He was at different times corporal, selectman, tighingman, school committee, "Sarvayar of Rhods," besides rendering service on special town committees. At a town meeting held in 17 05 it was voted " that the town doe nominate, appoint and Impower John Bemus, Sr., John Hastings, Sr., and Daniel Harrington, Sr., to locke ought sum convenient place to keep the gramer schoole for the second quarter sum where neere where it was kept for the middle of the town last." In 1707 it was ordered at a town meeting "that Netl Bright and murings Sawin take Present caer of one Sarah Honey for her entertainment and also to Desire Doct. Palsgrave Wellington to locke after her wounds, and John Bemis was ordered to forthwith make inquiry how long she had been in town and report at next meeting."

John Bemis was the father of fourteen children and lived to the age of seventy-three years. Samuel, the sixth child, was born in 1690. At the age of twenty-six he married Sarah, daughter of John Barnard of Sudbury, by whom he had two children, Samuel Jr. and Edmund while living at Watertown.
