There is a slight doubt as to whether she was a dau. of Joseph, but the probability is that she was. [Draper:66]

BEMIS - PIERCE-VILES CORRECTION: -- Bond's History of Watertown and The Bemis Genealogy by T. W. M. Draper state that John Viles, who died in Waltham 4 Feb. 1774, age 67, married in Watertown 2 Jul. 1731 Susanna Bemis, daughter of John (2) Bemis and Mary Harrington, born 3 Dec. 1705. This is incorrect.

John Bemis' will dated 6 May 1729 and proved 20 Nov. 1732, mentions his daughter "Susanna Pierce". Watertown records give the marriage of Isaac Pierce and Susanna Bemis on 7 Sept. 1722.

Joseph (3) Bemis, son of John (2), married Elizabeth Pierce, daughter of Joseph (3) and Martha, had a daughter Susanna, born 13 Jan. 1713/14, who married 2 Jul. 1731 John Viles, and died in Waltham 28 Nov. 1785, age 72. Joseph Bemis' will dated 4 May 1738 and proved 20 Jul. 1741, mentions his daughter "Susannah Viles".

At the present time, I am not able to prove the ancestry of John Viles who was brought from Boston by Thomas Smith at an early age. It seems probable that he was a grandson of John (2) vial and Mary Williams, but I have found no record of his birth. John Viles died, according to Saunderson's History of Waltham, 4 Feb. 1774, age 67, which would make it impossible for him to have been the son of either John (3) Vial and Mary Adams or Nathaniel (3) Vial and Sarah Bennet. There was another son of John (2)'s, Joseph (3), who was not mentioned in his Father's will dated 15 Oct. 1720 and proved 21 Nov. 1720, but was named in his grandmother William's will in 1679.

A note about an error in Bond and Draper:

I suspect your information came either from Bond's Families of Watertown or Thomas Draper's Bemis genealogy. You all continue the error made by Bond on the marriage of Susanna Bemis to John Viles (I find Draper hopelessly confused and his "scholarship" suspect).

If you begin with the Bemis line in Bond, you will get the error. At that point, Bond gives Susanna, b. 1705 dau. of John Bemis/Mary Harrington (I think she is #18* in the Bemis line). If you start with the Viles line in Bond, you go back to Bemis 37**, Susanna, b. 1713/14 dau. of Joseph Bemis and Elizabeth Peirce/Pierce. This is the correct linkage.

The proof is given by Frederick Wead in NEHGR 101: 72 (1947) where he has examined the wills of the fathers. John Bemis (m. Mary Harrington) mentions his daughter, Susanna Pierce [She married Isaac Pierce]. Joseph Bemis (son of John/Mary) mentions his daughter, Susanna Viles.

If you have an ahnentafel, you'll have to correct the lineage back from here; if doing a descendant listing, only the marriage is wrong. I have information on John Viles/Susanna Bemis' 13 children which I am willing to share. [Bond also has errors in their marriages/children as well.]
