  Notes for Ebenezer Bemis:
[NEGHR:1956:110:234] "Notes"

GRAVES-BEMIS-PIERCE: Correction:--In his "History of Westminster, Massachusetts" (1893), Mr. Heywood states that Lucy Graves (born June 21, 1768, daughter of Peter Graves of Westminster and (later) Groton, Mass.) married Ebenezer Bemis of Westminster, a brother of Edmund Bemis, Jr., who married Susanna Graves, a younger sister of Lucy. This statement is incorrect. Lucy Graves was married in 1778 to John Pierce ("Westminster Vital Records", 1908, pp. 145, 175). Mr. Heywood's statement has, however, presumably influenced later compilers of genealogies, and helped to deter further investigation (see "The Bemis History and Genealogy", 1900, by Col. Thomas W. M. Draper).

Peter Graves died in Groton 29 Oct. 1824 (see "Groton Vital Records"). His will is dated 27 Oct. 1824, and was allowed on 28 Dec. 1824 (Middlesex County Probate Records, Lib. 150, Fol. 26). This will furnishes indisputable evidence. It makes specific provision for Peter Graves' "daughter Lucy, the wife of John Pierce". It also makes provision for his "daughter Susanna, the wife of Edmund Bemis".
