Notes for Josiah Bemis:
I found a reference to Bemis, Josiah, Jr., Waltham on the FTW CD #147. pps. 927-928 (Massachusetts Revolutionary War Soldiers and Sailors, 1775-1782). It describes him as a private with his service in two different companies and receipt for wages. He was 5'11" tall. (Curtis Bemis)

Josiah Jr. received a bounty land warrent for his military service which is listed in the Illinois Public Land Purchase Records as follows:

William Bond's (late Gardner's) 37th regt.; muster [p.928] roll for Aug., 1775, dated Camp Prospect Hill; stature, 5 ft. 11 in.; also, order for bounty coat or its equivalent in money, dated Prospect Hill, Dec. 2, 1775; also, Capt. Child's co., 25th regt.; receipt for wages, etc., for July, 1776, dated Mt. Independence.

Josiah Bemis is listed as a member of "the first Company of Militia in Waltham, including all from sixteen years old and upwards."

"His [Stephen Charles Sr] wife, Sarah Bemis, was born in Fryeburg, October 26, 1798, daughter of Thaddeus Bemis, an early speculator in real estate and an extensive agriculturalist of this town. Mr. Bemis was born in Billerica, Mass., in 1760, and died in Fryeburg, Me., in 1843. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. His wife, Judith Day, was born in Fryeburg in 1767, the first female child born in this town. She died here in 1843. The children of Mr. and Mrs. Bemis were: Hannah, who married John Swain; Betsy, who married Amos Andrews; Joseph, who married Mehitabel Kilgore; Thaddeus, who married Nabby Eastman; Amos,who married a Miss Whiting; Mary, who married Isaachar Andrews; Sarah, who married Stephen Charles; Benjamin, who married Esther Webb; Judith, who married Mason Hastings; and Isaac, unmarried."
