Notes for Capt. Phinehas Stearns:
[Bond:515] Captain PHINEHAS STEARNS...a farmer and blacksmith, of Watertown; was a soldier at Lake George, 1756, and was among the earliest to take up arms in the Revolution. He commanded a company on Dorchester Heights, when the British evacuated Boston. He, with Samuel Barnard (a major in the Revolutionary Army), and John Randall, all of Watertown, were of the "Boston Tea-Party," and assisted in that renowned transaction. He was offered a Colonel's commission, but the care of his young children, upon the death of his wife, and of a family of apprentices and journeymen, prevented his continuing in the public service after the British left Boston. He was distinguished for his benevolent and cheerful disposition, which was strongly marked in his open, manly countenance. This, with his good sense and strict integrity, made him a favourite of all who knew him.

[Draper:176] Capt. Stearns was a farmer and blacksmith in Watertown; he took part in 1756 in the Lake George expedition as a private and was one of the earliest to take up arms in the Revolution. He was one of the participants in the "Boston Tea Party", and commanded a company on Dorchester Heights when the British evacuated Boston. He was offered a Colonel's Commission, but declined it, as, on account of his wife's death, his children needed all his care. In Watertown he was one of the most benevolent and highly esteemed citizens.

Note: In [Draper:176] George Washington Stearns, Polly Stearns and Lucy Stearns are listed incorrectly as children of Hannah Bemis and Phinehas Stearns. However, their birthdates follow the marriage of Phinehas and his second wife, Esther Sanderson, November 23, 1780. See (NEHGR:127:288) (Steve Dahlstrom:11/10/02)
